Mercedes-Benz Unwraps The AMG GT - But Is 500 HP Enough To Take On The 911?

Mercedes-Benz Unwraps The AMG GT - But Is 500 HP Enough To Take On The 911?

The new Mercedes AMG GT has been revealed, complete with an SLS-inspired silhouette, a stunning design and a brand new turbocharged 4.0-litre V8. It becomes the flagship sports car in Mercedes’ range but isn’t a direct replacement for the SLS, focusing instead on rivaling models like the Porsche 911 Turbo and Jaguar F-Type R.

The new sports car will be offered from launch in two flavours: the GT and the GT S. Both are powered by the same engine but where the GT gets a 456bhp version, the GT S is upgraded to 503bhp. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, with the GT S able to accelerate from 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds and the GT two-tenths behind that.

Kudos to Mercedes for not getting sucked into the horse power wars. Know your market and produce a car to fit the niche you are targeting. Most buyers for this won't care if it is a few HP short or a few 10th of a second short of the competition. They want the total package which balances of sportiness, luxury, dealer experience, sound and torque. The SLS will deliver on all of these.

Agreed, and I like the design, feel like I'd love it in person, seems as if Mercedes is giving their AMG unit a much longer leash these days...nice job

The power ratings are probably somewhat arbitrary on this thing to protect the SL. Considering that Audi easily makes 560+ horsepower from the same type of engine the 450 and 500 ratings are extremely conservative. My first reaction is that it's too short and bulbous but I am sure it will end up looking pretty good on the road. It just seems too hard to mess up.

Agreed, @Terry989. This car is similar to the approach of the 911 where it isn't about flat-out horsepower, but an all-around driving experience. Can't wait to get mine in black...haha...dreams!

Not bad ..but the design is too generic for me. I still waiting for mid engine but with engine behind the passengers cockpit, all from Mercedes.

Bad proportion, looks too much like a chick car, too.

How did they actually manage to make it look so damn ugly?

If you saw a Nissan GT-R and this, no one would even think this AMG GT thing is a supercar but more as a over-glorified Mercedes SLK.

Basically, Nissan GT-R, Acura NSX and Lexus have nothing to worry about.

i like it, but i'd probably still take a 991 911 c4 over this. the interior is beautiful and exterior echoes sls with a long bonnet that is not my thing...

lol about the joker who said "Nissan GT-R, Acura NSX and Lexus have nothing to worry about."--i would be more worried about MB if the clients of gt-r/nsx/lexus all of a sudden came to mb/bmw/audi...

Love it. If Mercedes incorporated the engineering and tech from their Black Series cars, this car will be amazing. I'm sure there will be future iterations with greater hp, but this is the perfect starting point.

I think Mercedes may have hit the "Bullseye" here. Really like the cab rear styling and much nicer and more exotic dash then a 911.I think it may actually take a chunk out of 911 sales.

Nice but I'd buy the 911 Turbo
