California Leads The Nation With Over 100,000 Plug-in Vehicles Sold Since 2010

nissan, California, EV, leaf, teslaCalifornia has topped a milestone 100,000 plug-in cars sold since they were introduced there in 2010, the California Plug-In Electric Vehicle Collaborative announced Tuesday.

The group said that California residents buy about 40 percent of the plug-in electric vehicles sold in the U.S., or 102,440 between December 2010 and August 2014.

"California's plug-in electric vehicle market is ramping up, and we expect to see significant growth over the next ten years as customers realize how economical and convenient they are," the group's Executive Director, Christine Kehoe, said in a statement.

It's a Tesla world out here in So Cal with the occasional Volt, Leaf and Prius plug in though those along with Accord, Fusion, and C-Max are harder to distinguish from their hybrid counterparts.

So California is burning more coal to power those electric autos. Also, they have to dispose of all the toxic batteries when the cars are retired.

Still a good deal for the environment.
- Batteries are recycled, not thrown in landfills
- For 2013, California generated 0.51% of its power from directly from coal, and a total of 7.81% once imports are accounted for - - - slightly down from 2012. Total power consumption in 2013 for California was down 2% from 2012, despite adding 332,000 people between July 1, 2012 and July 1 2013, a growth rate of 0.9%, that is the highest since 2003-04 Bush driven recession.
