What better way to test out the new MINI 5-door's credentials than putting it up against the daddy of all hatchbacks, the Volkswagen Golf?

And when it comes to the king of Golfs, it has to be the Golf GTI – it’s a fine match for the new MINI Cooper S five-door. The Golf is bigger, more powerful and more expensive, but the MINI takes just four-tenths longer to get from 0-62mph, with the manual car posting a time of 6.9 seconds. So which would we rather live with day-to-day?

The VW has none of the torque steer issues of the Mini. The Mini is for divorced women 45+ (their main demographic). The GTI is for people who like cars.

MINI look horrible with 4 doors; GTI looks fine, arguably even better with 4 doors.

Poor MINI, their first ever model was the high water mark.

A friend of cours has a Mini.He bought it as a young man who wanted 'fashion' Now he hates it. It's a POS, noisy, cramped, pig ugly, never a 'real' Mini anyway. What a ludicrous comparison, really. The Golf is a great car, always has been. Not a stupid BMW fashion toy.
