SPIED: FIRST Shots Of The All-New Mercedes-Benz E-Class — Has It COMPLETELY Lost Its More Original Character?
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has always had a complex, if you ask me. Of the sedans in the lineup, it sat directly in the middle of the volume selling C-Class and flagship S-Class. More or less, it had middle child syndrome, which meant it "acted out," to make sure it was noticed.

Remember when it debuted that quad headlight set up? Not only did it look sharp, it was an innovative design for the 90s. It made an impact on people. With the C-Class mimicking the big daddy S, it was pretty far out to see a Mercedes that strayed so far out of its comfort zone.

With the latest E-Class' update though, it seems that the car is starting to lose that unique quality. And if these latest spy shots are any indication, it isn't going to get any better. The last collection of shots simply showed a chassis mule with a modified C-Class body on it. Now we're seeing the next-gen E's body for the first time.

Though it is heavily camouflaged, it's clear that the shape will be a bit more rounded off than the current-gen car that was more of a throwback to the original E. Check out the rear door's shut line — it looks like it's from two generations ago when that car showed up in Men in Black.

From what I can see, the front facade looks rather bland, actually. It has a large mouth grille and headlights looking a bit too close for comfort to the all-new C. Hopefully when the clothes start to come off the design will be a bit more differentiated.

what i see is that Benz is creating one sausage cut to 3 lengths. no surprises on the exterior, and i suspect the interior will be a big step up.

The current Mercedes styling works better with the more room there is to play with so the E class should be ok.

I believe in brand continuity, but it's a bit ridiculous when you have to actually read the captions to tell if it's a C or E Class. "One sausage cut to 3 lengths" -- you nailed it freeagent!

They clearly stated that the pictures seen are the Eclass in a C class body!! Dont believe that mercedes designers would make the e look just like the S or the C ok! IT WONT!

It will sell because its an E Class... its a great car, and a symbol. I've had 3... that said the last truly good looking one was the 2007 update. Prior to that the 94/95 last editions of the W124 ->classic Mercedes cars. These are great cars, but not classics...

Mercs have become hideousy ugly and tasteless. I well remember back in the 90s when they abandoned the traditional radiator grille in the name of 'fashion'. Then it became smaller and smaller until there was a tiny pout in the middle of Korean jelly mould styling. And now, like a bizarre rerun of bell bottoms, the great ugly gape like a basking shark. The 'mouth' on the previous S class was about right in size, if misshapen. Why do Bentley and Rolls carefully guard their trademark designs? Mercedes have lost credibility- they were once right up there in peoples' hearts with the great marques. This is why, at least in Europe, people still buy the Volkswagens most of you Americans find 'boring', because they are timeless in styling, elegant and classic, as once were Mercedes, and even BMWs. Yuk!
