PARIS MOTOR SHOW: Volkswagen Rolls Out An All-New Plug-In Passat For Paris — Would YOU Want To See This In The U.S.?
Unveiled before the 2014 Paris Motor Show was the all-new Volkswagen Passat GTE. For those curious about what GTE hints at, two words: electric vehicle.
VW started the nomenclature with the Golf GTE and following up is the European Passat. Said to be using technology found in the conglomerate's electric halo car, the XL1, the Passat GTE will be the family hauler with a plug. According to a report I read from an Australian publication it is said to go 50km — 31 miles — solely using electric power.

The VW Golf GTE is not an EV, its a plug-in-hybrid.

Yet ANOTHER example of VW not having a clue. The American Passat does not have a hybrid whereas its major competition (Camry, Accord, Fusion, Optima, and Sonata) does. And of that lot, the Fusion and Accord go one better with a plug-in hybrid. Where is VW's product? It's being introduced in EUROPE--where diesels not hybrids rule--on a Passat that (1) is completely different from the American Passat and (2) not scheduled to be produced in Chattanooga.
Then again with VW's ghastly reputation for electrical gremlins, maybe it's a good thing they keep this in the Farterland (sic).
