Cadillac President de Nysschen Warns “Detroit fans – don’t mess with me.” Over Move To New York City
He has been on the job as president of Cadillac for less than 2 months, and Johan de Nysschen is already being turned into the company’s scapegoat #1. His biggest mistake in the eyes of his critics: Moving America’s former luxury brand to New York.

When the Daily Kanban reported hints of a move a month ago, it was dismissed as making “no sense,” as the Detroit News’ Mark Phelan declared. Last week, the nonsensical became official when GM finally confirmed that Cadillac is moving its HQ from Detroit to Manhattan. This being announced, “the wrath of hell descends upon me, I’m accused of moving the entire company just because I prefer to live in New York,” de Nysschen wrote today to his 291 Facebook friends. Apparently, the criticism rattled the usually unflappable de Nysschen. He writes:

Sorry but this is still MORE nonsense from the "Wunderkind"

IF he was a good manager - he could produce the right environment on the next floor of the same building - or across the street as well. IN todays world - the distance between two points is no longer valid - as a separation.

All he is doing by moving to NYC is spending money that could be better spent producing the actual "Luxury" cars with pure class that Cadillac does not have (THey have a couple of reasonably competitive small sport sedans - which are hardly in the Luxury Class)

There are still HUNDREDS of things that will require him to work with the rest of GM - engines - transmissions - air-conditioner compressors - and many others - including money - that will not be something he can avoid. And - he still has to answer to Mary Bara - and the stockholders. And I suggest that Mary Bara WILL have direct instant access to him whenever she wants too.

Johann is going to do great. The move to NYC is a big deal for Cadillac. Its really the only world-class city in the US - a petrie dish for what rich people around the world want and expect from high-end products.

Not to knock Detroit, but as a bankrupt municipality, wracked by problems, fled by rich people, bordering rural Canada - it is completely the wrong place to rebuild an iconic brand like Cadillac.

Miami has a Latin flavor, LA has an "entertainment" flavor (and lots of urban problems and no water), and the southern cities such as Dallas and Houston have wealth but some would argue less than international taste sensibilities - NYC is the only place to rebuild the brand.

Why don't we all take a step back and see what happens in two years.

NYC is the only "world class city" in the U.S.? I'd say the residents of LA, Dallas, Chicago, San Fran, and quite a few others would disagree.

well, Jrob. That's not, really a whole lot of world class cities, considering the fact that the U.S. is a big country with big economy?

But we all know why the European nations have all the most famous world class cities, as you can see so many American celebrities vacationing to Europe. Not to mention all the most famous luxury brands come from the European nations.

You don't really hear them going to Utah or North Dakota for their vacation stuff.

And yes, without NYC, the U.S. is left with a bunch of failed cities with crimes (LA), or cities with not much culture (Dallas).

NYC is the only American city that can challenge the European cities.

There is so much fail in JDMUSMusle's statements that I can't even take them seriously.

222max, fail exists only in your mind. Not in the others.

What's your world class city? Atlanta? Hahahaha ;)

I'm sorry but you are sadly misinformed if you don't think Chicago is a world class city. I'm not even referring to the international traffic from the busiest airport in the WORLD that is here in Chicago either.

Sorry Chicago isn't the busiest in the world.... however both sources are unreliable: CNN is crap and Rahm Emanuel... how did he ever get elected anyhow...

If Nysschen is so amazing, he could have worked wonders in Detroit.

Can't believe I'm going to say this, but I agree with you, Darringer. To me, this proves how weak he really is as a leader. Mercedes, BMW, Audi, and Lexus aren't successful because they are from Stuttgart, Munich, Ingolstadt, or Nagoya.

Those brands made those cities great in a way.

But in the American case, Detroit is practically giving all the bad reputation to the American car brands in general.

So at least, moving Caddy to NYC seems like an ok idea. But I think this guy just wanted to live in NYC.

I don't think he just wants to live in NYC. If he did he would move as money is not an issues. I think Cadi needs this infusion...

Where in NYC are they going to put the ASSEMBLY plants?

Until they actually do that one - the rest is just window dressing

If Detroit is NOT the correct area for Cadillac - why are they actually producing the cars there?

The move to SOHO is to use NYC as Cadillac's global hub. Marketing, Sales, and other positions like that will come out of that city. Production of many of Cadillac's vehicles will still be in Detroit.

Nysschen is forgetting the most basic thing - we - as customers - are the ones who decide what cars WE will buy - and the idea that we have to fall in line with the "vision" he has for making the cars smaller - but with big content - simply does not address why many of us buy a Luxury car.

Remembering that because of Lower residual value - the cars are simply priced too high to compete with the market - Cadillac has a double whammy - not just the least amount of space - but also a much higher actual cost. If he thinks we are going to pay a premium over BMW and Mercedes for his econoboxes - he will get a rude awakening - Cadillac Sales are already getting hit badly - and the one "vehicle" that is selling very well - the Escalade - is a truck - which he has said that he is not in favor of for the Marque.

When the CTS competed in the "3" series space = it was the largest car space wise in its "pricerange" and sold decently. Now the new CTS is the smallest little car in the "e" class - is priced ABOVE the competition - and simply is not worth it.

And it is HIS comments showing a complete disregard for the customer - that made MY decision to buy foreign - when I was going to wait for the larger RWD car. (It turned out to be just another "smaller car" too) I thank HIM for his help in making that decision.
