Gotta wonder why we even have F1 racing. What purpose does it serve?

Just because you created a sport does NOT mean it has to exist forever. Look at professional high-diving:

^^This was once a sport^^. It was dangerous and stupid. Just like F1. And now it apparently is NOT a sport any longer.

So why do anything . . . ?

Space is dangers, we should not go there . . .

Nascar fans live an "unhealthy" lifestyle during race weekends, so cancel races . . .

Too much exposure from the sun causes skin cancer, so we must stay inside . . .

LOL. Are you seriously comparing F1 to NASA? I'll keep it short: We accept risk to delight the soul and inspire the next generation. F1 utterly fails this test (NASA passes).

I agree randy3023. Other than testing for extreme tolerable limits I don't see any F1 tech trickling down to the consumer unless your name is Ferrari (and that was before their move to 1.6L engines). How does a 1.6 litre hybrid with 700bhp end up in your car? WEC has it right... each LMP1 car has tech conducive of their manufacturer's vision and strategy - V8 Hybrid, V4 Turbo Hybrid, V6 Diesel Turbo Hybrid. WEC is wayyy more exciting and alot can happen in 6-24hours - just ask Toyota.

It's a sport - - - why do you need things to trickle down? Since nothing trickles down from football, soccer, baseball, horse racing, curling, etc? It's a sport and the drivers are athletes.

By your logic, Nascar and IndyCar should be canceled because they do not bring tech down to the showroom.

It takes a while, due to expense, F1 tech DOES trickle down into production vehicles:

F1 tech that has trickled down into production vehicles:

- Active suspension
- Active aero
- Hybrid energy recovery systems
- Electric boost
- Carbon Fiber chassis
- Multi speed, 7+ gear box
- Paddle shifters
- Tire design and construction
- Disc brakes

- Carbon disc brakes
- Drive by wire
- Improved vehicle aerodynamics
- Real-time vehicle telemetry
