WHY Aren't ANY Of The MAJOR Automakers Innovating Like TESLA?
For Tesla, yesterday was a pretty big day. That's because it dropped the all-new Tesla Model S with dual motors, all-wheel drive and what it's calling "autopilot."

Although investors didn't seem to appreciate the new D as the equity traded lower today nearly eight percent, the car has set off a wave of excitement in the auto community. Nearly anything with 700 horsepower will do that.

Obviously the Model S has been a pretty significant achievement, but by now adding the new features AND power, it makes you wonder: where the hell are the OTHER guys?

As Agent 001 and were discussing the all-new D last night, he asked a great question: "Why aren't the majors innovating like this?" Frankly, I couldn't muster up an answer aside from a text that joked "the majors can't think their way out of a paperbag."

To me though, it seems that may be the case. One of the most lagging industries seems to be automotive, both in culture and product. It took Elon Musk to raise the bar in a new way.

That said, I'd love to hear your take, Spies. What say you?

Yesterday, we unveiled the world’s first dual electric motor production car and announced that new safety and autopilot hardware is standard on every new Model S.

Conventional all wheel drive vehicles distribute power to the wheels from a single engine driving a complex mechanical transmission system. By contrast, Dual Motor Model S, which comes with either the 60 kWh or 85 kWh battery, has a motor on each axle, digitally and independently controlling torque to the front and rear wheels. The result is unparalleled control of traction, with instantaneous response to the motors giving drivers precisely controlled performance in all conditions. With its digital torque controls and low center of gravity, Dual Motor Model S has the most capable road holding and handling of any vehicle ever produced...

You are right, I totally agree. I mean, dual motors, my goodness, guys. Adding a second electric motor to power the front wheels and now all wheel drive!!!

I mean seriously, is there a single car that has an AWD system nowadays? NONE. Except Tesla.

And autopilot. This turns Tesla into a car that can drive on its own. Is there a single car that can do automatic driving on the market right now? NONE. Practically there is not a single car that can do this, and no one, I say again, NO ONE has ever done this!!

And Mercedes S class does not count because that is German. We are talking about American, which has the technology that is from 1980's, which makes all of those things in the new Tesla absolutely amazing!! And all wheel drive!!! Woooowww!!!! Finally, an "ok" AWD system in an "AMERICAN" car!!! Woohoo, finally America's technology is catching up!!!! I'm crying, my friends. I'm crying.

I mean we all already know the European technologies/engineering is way far superior to the American one, so really, spies, come on. This kind of trolling news is not good, it only just makes Americans real sad.

@JDMUSMuscle - Tesla is the only one who has an AWD system that improves range, Tesla is also the fastest 4 door sedan that does 0-60 stock.

You just plain dumb.

"I mean seriously, is there a single car that has an AWD system nowadays? NONE. Except Tesla."

WHAT????? EVERYONE HAS AWD.

MERCEDES AND AUDI ALREADY HAVE THESE SYSTEMS. MERCEDES IT READY TO GO, BUT THE FEDS WON'T ALLOW IT.

Since when is Tesla an innovation and not a confidence swindle? Their cars are NOT viable in any sense, not have they stood the test of time.

I agree. I mean, I don't see why I would choose this Tesla over Corvette or the new Escalade.

Because frankly, the new Escalade and the Corvette actually look different.

This car, looks like a Toyota Camry, and even though I have seen two of them, I actually thought they were Toyota Camry. Like, if that thing did not have a Tesla badge on it, I would just think it is a Camry. But from back? Looks more like an old Pontiac or something.

Because Musk doesn't have to manage by committee, and they do. Look at Porsche; they have board meetings where they vote down their own heritage in favor of the no-risk dollar.

The answer is simple, most other car companies are run by accountants. They can't innovate if their life depends on it. The only thing they are capable of is protecting things that sound like 100 year trademarks. Cause that is pretty much their only win against Tesla, their lawyers got Tesla to give up on Model E cause it "sounded like" Model T. They probably should be careful about calling the Tesla Model 3 the affordable car, it has ford in the word.

Because Tesla is a small company without global responsability. If something failed, the company can dismiss. The large car manufacturers cannot disappear, they have to be very cautious with the R&D. There were lot of "innovative" car brands in the past which are not exist any more.

Oh BS, Musk is personally invested all in into Tesla. For most other brands, even if they bankrupt the company, they just get away with a golden parachute. I mean lets be honest, it didn't help GM and Chrysler being what you call "Globally responsible".

1. Other auto manufacturers do not have a business model that supports it.

2. Other auto manufacturers would rather develop their own tech instead of licensing Tesla's, even if it cost them $0 in licensing.

3. They rather sell you another fuel-based system that offers longer revenue stream per customer.

4. Large corporations run by committee are slow to change and adopt new technologies.

5. Tesla is a niche market competitor that other manufacturers do not see as a threat until Tesla customers stop being wealthy and start looking like large portions of their customers.

GM's managers are failures. That is the simple answer.
