Tesla Model S Owners Start Petition — They Want AWD And Autopilot, ASAP
Since the announcement of the "D," Tesla's stock price has been paying a bit of a price, literally. Yesterday, shares of TSLA traded down more than five percent.

It's pretty clear that the market was expecting something completely new or entry-level as opposed to a more expensive dual motor alternative and the addition of the autopilot feature. I think the question now becomes "will it continue to slide?"

If you own shares of TSLA, I hope you took some profits off the table.

Now if that wasn't enough, it turns out — according to reports — that owners of a new Model S are not so happy with the new updates as they bought cars before they were implemented. In fact, one owner got so pissed they started a petition for all-wheel drive and autopilot to be retrofitted to their older Model S vehicles.

In the traditional world of cars, if you didn't do your diligence that's your problem. But in a world where Elon Musk has sold the vehicle essentially like a piece of technology hardware where you just update it, buyer's expectations have changed.

So, will he be able to feed the 98 signees need? We will see.

...Meanwhile, some Model S owners are upset that their vehicles lack the new AWD feature or the hardware that would enable them to get the autopilot and safety features. Richard Wolpert of Los Angeles has launched a Change.org petition asking Tesla to come up with a retrofit; so far 98 people have signed it.

“I was deceived into buying an old model two weeks prior to release of new model,” wrote Mike Brookstone of Santa Clara, one of the signers of the petition...

Stock volatility is nothing new for TSLA. But I think most of the market just didn't understand why the D was so awesome. So they followed the usual "buy on rumor, sell on news". It is sad how little a lot of people understand about cars. I mean the headlines about the Tesla AWD system as being "catch up" was sad. They didn't realize that this was the first AWD system that actually improved efficiency and range. But I guess that is the market for you.

As far as people getting retrofits, unlikely. And it is a silly petition, be it cars or technology. I bought a laptop recently, the manufacturer released a new one with a new better GPU. Do I demand a retrofit? In technology more than car people are used to things becoming outdated quickly and something new coming out that is so much better. At end of the day, when Tesla came to them and they signed the contract, Tesla delivered what they were contracted to deliver. (Don't get me wrong I understand their frustration). But at end of the day they are not being realistic.

Agree. However if Tesla sold the Model S under the pretense that nothing will change between the 2014 and 2015 model while working on the change that would be rather dishonest. They should have never made such claims just to sell the current models.

Its completely unreasonable for existing owners to demand an upgrade. The fact that they are complaining goes to show that some of them are narcissistic and somewhat immature.

Now for Tesla, they have gotten a "pass" for the past couple of years since launch.

Facts - (a) tesla basically got a "free" factory (the old Nummi Toyota plant) from the state of California; (b) vocal, media-savvy rich people were Tesla's earliest customers - giving it buzz; (c) they had some technical issues (a few battery fires and some propulsion motor failures); (d) they have no dealer network to provide after-sales support in the gigantic US of A; and (e) their cars received generous tax benefits that passed to the initial purchaser.

As these initial "halo" things start to die out - as the warranty repairs mount, as the lack of real after-sales support system starts to piss off customers, and lastly as the design stays static (or is Tesla going to do a "mid-cycle" styling refresh of the Model S?) and people realize the generically pleasing shape is just boring - the company will start to have problems. By the way - in my opinion, its impossible that the new Tesla SUV can be sold for anywhere near the $35,000 mentioned in the press.

Time will tell

Also - think about 5 years from now, who will be buying a used 2012/2013/2014 Tesla Model S. I suspect they will be basically, valueless doorstops. Hope the toxic parts (i.e. the batteries) can at least be recycled.

How much of a market is there today for a gently used iPhone 4?

@mre30 - Your facts are a bit off.

a) Tesla did not exactly get a free factory from California, they bought it for around 42 million. (this did not include the track which they bought later). Now this was partly offset by Toyota buying 50 million of Tesla stock.(which is now worth almost a billion). This came out to a good deal for Toyota since they were just going to sell it to a rail road on the cheap and the whole factory would be demolished and used to store trains. The only role California played is convincing the rail road to give them a chance at finding someone else to make use of the factory.

c) They had a few minor issues, the battery fires were not exactly issues since they happened after high speed impact. (Hence why NHTSA ruled that there was no issue, but Tesla did offer free shielding upgrades for those "concerned"). As far as motors go, that was also not really an issue since it was tied down to a lose wire. I think the 12v issue was probably the biggest issue.

d) Tesla does have a dealer network to provide after sale support. Tesla just owns their own dealer network.

f) not sure what you mean, so far Tesla's after sale support is ranked #1 by consumers. Tesla will probably do a styling refresh after the 5 year mark like all manufacturers. The AWD upgrade was more of a half life update. To most people it is not a problem as they do custom mods to stand out, like the saleen and etc.

The Tesla Model X SUV is not the 35k car, the 35k is the Tesla Model 3.

g) Why would a 5 year old Tesla be valueless? 5 year old Tesla Roadsters sell fairly well. And they are out of warranty. a 5 year old Tesla still has 3 year warranty on drivetrain and battery. Also, Lithium Ion batteries are non-toxic (and should not be confused with the toxic 12v batteries). But overall, yes the gigafactory will recycle the batteries.

The new Tesla SUV (model X) won't be sold for 35k. It'll be about the same price as the current model S. Model 3 is the one that will be sold for 35k. But I do agree with you that to sell anywhere in that price range will be a formidable challenge.

People who want a retrofit should get one by buying the new car and either selling or keep their current one.
