Toyota Comes Clean - New GT-86/FR-S In The Works
With worldwide sales of the Toyota GT-86 entry-level sports car and its Subaru BRZ brethren down in the dumps, Toyota seems to be intent on keeping its foothold in this sexy little market segment. Speaking to Motoring, Karl Schlicht, the executive vice president of sales and marketing for Toyota Motor Europe, said the Japanese automaker is "pretty serious about keeping the GT 86 pure and keeping a car like that in our lineup." Does this mean that a second generation is underway?

This thing is so much better than a BMW M4.

Sure it is, it is so much better because it's on the list of most complained cars for 2014 and that no one buys it because it's a piece of crap. Yes, it is much better than an M4. LoL!

I agree, it sucks.

Just like how Lexus LS is for people who can't afford Mercedes S class, meaning posers.

Letting Subaru engineer a rear wheel drive coupe when they have NO EXPERIENCE in doing so was sheer idiocy. Using a Subaru engine that develops valve train clatter and oil leaks by 75K miles was sheer IDIOCY. Making it impossible to install a turbo was MORONIC.

Toyota has experience in RWD and the platform should have been designed to be a Celica in Toyota 4-cylinder and turbo versions, a Supra with a V6 (priced in the Mustang GT range), and a Lexus something variant.

The FRS/BRZ is a slow car with lackluster handling. For the money a Mini Cooper S or GTI will out gun it and out handle it. For the price of a loaded FRS a base Mustang GT will obliterate it.

The FRS/BRZ is one of those moronic Japanese "balanced" sports cars and translates into inadequate power and handling and a tiny fan club that will take a kitana to anyone that dares say the Miata and the Hachi Roku are garbage.

Step up. I kill you in my Mustang at Willow Springs or make you a castrati in a Sagaris I just nabbed for $35K.

Pick your weapon of death.

Mat has been saying the car handles terrible since the car came out despite that every road tester loved the way it drove. If you like oversteer, buy the FRS. If you like closer to neutral buy the BRZ. I love the way my BRZ handles even with the crap tires it came with. I wouldn't trade it for a mustang even knowing they are faster. So what. It's a street car and lap times are not my number one priority. This thing is way more fun than a mini or a GTI.
Matt should do some research. He says they made it impossible to put a turbo on. There must be at least 10 companies making turbo kits for it and nearly as many making superchargers as well. Even an electric supercharger with a turbo housing from a Cessna airplane engine. Drop a few hundred on suspension tuning and you might be amazed.
I do agree that it would have been a better car if Toyota would have built it instead of Subaru. I really wish Honda would build something similar. Their ergonomics are second to none.

Unless they lower the price or add and additional 50+ hp, sales are not going to noticeably increase.
