Are BMW Models Starting To Look Too Much Alike?

A lot of people have been saying lately that the BMW range is made up of cars that look exactly the same. While for someone like me that sounds like absolute craziness, a picture I saw today actually made me have second thoughts.

Writing about Bimmers all day long you get to know exactly what sets one apart from the other. You can tell by the smallest details which is which and that is generally a good thing.

Starting? Starting? When u are on the dealer lot, you have to walk behind all BMWs to read the number on them so you know which model they are. The X3 and X5 models haven't changed in 10 years...all the rest are just either longer or shorter with a different number on them, but all the same.

Yeah, now BMW is following Audi's lead by taking one design then stretching it and shrinking it to fit different segments. Really? No one noticed the Audis of the last 10 yrs looking like one car except for maybe the R8 and TT. As far BMW is concerned the 5 and 7 are a little too close in design in the cycle and the SUV's, again, remind me of what Audi is doing--papa bear, mama bear and baby bear, all the same types of bears.

The 3 and 5 have the exact same lines. Two black models were parked next to each other and you can trace them perfectly. The X6 and 5GT are a bit more different but I haven't seen a new X6 yet.

The problem is that BMW is building too many smaller "series." X1, X2, 1-series, 2-series, gran coupe, 2-series, supposed V line of city cars, etc. The new X7, 7 series, and I hope 9 series sedan can not come fast enough. Also read about 8-series coupe but BMW may also build a 8 series Gran Coupe. Enough with the GC.

Just because BMW production factory uses large rubber stamps to make all of their models just not mean the cars are 'exactly' the same.

I'm waiting for the 6 GranCoupe GT to launch, as none of the current models offer the exact combination of jelly bean shape and limited cargo space that I am seeking.

At the risk of being bashed for this statement, I saw a new 320 sedan this morning, and literally the first thing that popped into my head was: that looks a lot like a Honda Accord.

All of the car companies have a theme or particular look to their cars. I think its laughable when people start trying to defend that auto manufacturer's cars don't look alike. NEWS FLASH: ALL car company models have a COMMON THEME or look to them. Cadillac has those angular head lights. Audi the bigger grills; MB that melted looking front end. Toyota tear drop front end; BMW kidney grills in all cars. I get so tired of reading about how this company or that car company cars all look alike. MOVE ON; they ALL do in a certain capacity. That how their brands identifies itself to the public.

There are 'themes' as you call them...or common design elements as others might say. BMW does have the kidney grille, but beyond that, the just are either smaller or larger versions of the same body style. Other car companies can use a common design element from model to model, but the commonality stops THERE, and the models go on for more individuality in the line-up. BMW's have lost their individuality, their reliability is mediocre, and now they are losing the one element that made them the ultimate driving machine, and that was the great handling ability that is being replaced with a more dull, numbing electronic feel.
