CAR WARS! Is The Lexus RC F REALLY THAT Far Behind The BMW M4? These Results MAY Surprise You!
If you're head hasn't been completely in the sand over the past six months, you've likely come across the very predictable review comparing both the all-new BMW M4 and all-new Lexus RC F. It's probably one of this year's most popular face offs, but it's all sort of predictable.

The BMW is the performance benchmark and is a great track day machine thanks to its planted nature, fine suspension tuning and stupid fast gearbox.

The Lexus, not so much. While it's been chastised for its heftier weight and controversial styling it seems that just about everyone who has gotten behind the wheel has found its performance paling in comparison to the M4.

I've been a bit skeptical of this since I found the first-gen IS F to be a very capable street machine. Frankly, we're not racing these things, we're driving to our offices. That's why I am not always a fan of these quantified tests — they don't tell the truth about really owning one and it becomes about tenths of a second. Pretty stupid, honestly.

Here's where the plot thickens. Motor Trend recently put both the M4 and RC F on the same track and geeked out over performance figures. The results were a bit startling.

In one lap, the M4 chalked up a time of 1:23.73 and the RC F nailed a 1:24.05 around the Streets of Willow.

This week on Head 2 Head, presented by Tire Rack, Carlos Lago pits two rear-drive luxury coupes - the 2015 BMW M4 and the 2015 Lexus RC-F - against each other in a battle for tire-smoking glory. Also, we find out which one is faster and more fun to drive by visiting the instrumented test track, the winding road course at Hyundai’s Proving Ground, and Streets of Willow racetrack with pro driver Randy Pobst. Has Lexus built a sports coupe with performance on par with BMW's M Division? We can't wait to find out.

Brand new 2014 C350, got it at BRUMOS in JAX where I purchased my LS460 and my MB C230 Kompressor. The new C Coupe won't be out until end of 2015/early 2016. I received a great deal like I did with the LEXUS and old MB.
BTW I still have the LEX, its been sitting at JAX airport since end of September, interested? I will probably keep it too, no need to sell it;)

@meatdumbass I bought all them brand new, The C230 back in 2005 which got traded in for the LS460 in 2009. Now I just purchased the C350 and still have the LS.

What I love about cars like the ISF, CTSV, now the RCF is that they AREN'T BMWs and are their own unique flavor. Does the Lexus weigh too much? Yes. Does it really matter? No! I'm not a huge fan of the Lexus face, bit it is at least trying to be the un-BMW.

For better or worse, Lexus is not the Japanese BMW; it is the Japanese Lexus. Sushi isn't everyone's taste.

I'm hoping the next Cadillac will be a medium-rare filet mignon...i.e. unashamedly American just as the Lexus is unabashedly Japanese.

Impressive. These numbers and subjective tests "near the limit" are more than good enough for 99% of the driving public.Add to that is Lexus reliability and this looks like another classic that will be recycled in the used car market for decades to come (like the original SC coupe from the 90s)

BTW, the car that would embarrass both of these cars is the upcoming M2, and worth every penny of the $55,000 it will cost.

Agree with u Mdarringer, everyone trying to be BMW makes for a boring choice of cars! Would love to see Cadillac do the El Mirage and make it a great opulent high speed cruiser not an M6/M6 wannabe!

Funny stuff...who can drive like this but professionals anyway? And before you start your flame posts about how great you are, don't waste your our time with your BS. Look around when you are on the road...people can barely stay focused long enough to maintain a steady speed with the flow of traffic. For every day driving, too close to call...not to mention that car magazines are so far up BMW's ass it's barely worth reading them any more.

The Europe worshippers have been saying "Oh! Lexus RC-F weighs too much and has less torque!! It will most likely drive like a Toyota Camry!! An appliance!!! LOL!!"

And yet, it is Lexus RC-F that has NA V8, not BMW M4. BMW M4 is just all about sounding like a fart that comes from your speakers. But the Europe worshippers now defend this fart sound that comes out of the audio system.

And with all that much power, M4 was only faster by.....a second? I thought all that much of heaviness and less torque of an RC-F would make it a lot slower than an M4, but it looks like Lexus made their RC-F that way to show that their engineering performance is this good, even with all that disadvantages against the RC-F.

So, RC-F is in a way, like saying "Oh hey, BMW. You guys pretty much suck at making a good sports car, but we will just make it a little heavier just not to offend you guys. Is that cool?"

And now I bet the Europe worshippers will be saying "Ohhh!!! But it's still Japanese!! Japan suxx!!! Europe = No 1!! Europe is our god!! Our lord Europe, please deliver me from poverty!! Fill me in with your luxury!!!!"

And not to mention, this Lexus RC-F will be THE MOST RELIABLE COUPE in the segment, and BMW M4 will have fun being in the repair shop at least once a week.

And I really don't think BMW earned a lot from their partnership with Toyota? It's just they gave away a lot to Toyota, so only Toyota is laughing now.

Japanese engineering = The best

And is this the reason why M4s and M3s have always and will always sell more volume than ISFs/RCFs and win 99% of the comparisons?

@JDMUSMuscle I'd go with the Lexus in a heartbeat.

Of course M3/4 will sell more, since the society we live in is nothing but a slave of the European luxury brands in general (Not just cars).

But selling more does not mean it is "better". Justin Bieber's CD sells a lot. Is he the best singer in the world? McDonald's sells tons of burgers, are they the standard of all restaurants?

People would still buy an M3/4 even if it had 10 horsepowers all for the sake of the "glorious" European badge.

I'd go with any of the two, you cannot go wrong with either. They are both awesome cars for different people. But the M3/M4s will always sell more, be more popular and will always be the benchmark that all other automakers target to beat. And regardless of all the biased comments, the M3/M4s seem to win 99% of comparisons. Just the facts, now stop drinking the hatorade.

i dont see why anyone should hate on either car. ive had 3 m3's and and one is-f.
although i didnt like the is-f as much as the m3's ill definitely admit it was a satisfying ride. even if its not as good, its really good enough for most.
seriously the rc-f lost by 3 tenths of a second and weighs more 400lbs more !!! gotta give lexus credit for making a car thats easy to drive go just about neck and neck with the "mighty" M4.
that being said which would i rather have ? of course the M4 is the king of the class, but id still take another rc-f if the lease is priced well.
once the hype comes down on both these cars, the m4 should be in the mid 800's and the rcf mid 700.
both cars are awesome, but the sound of the natural v8 will definitely be more enjoyable over bmw's turbo which no one seems to like..
as far as style, maybe in pics you guys dont like it, in person it looks really agressive and unique , id take one in the ultra sonic blue for sure..

What is really interesting is how close in performance the 2 US pony cars are to these 2 in terms of 0-60 and on track performance. The Camaro with ILF package is quicker around Willow then the M4. The Mustang virtually matches the Lexus RCF around Willow. Both of these cars are roughly 50% of the price of the BMW and Lexus.

If I had to compare EVERYTHING across the board for these two vehicles -- performance, comfort, appearance, price, reliability, practicality -- I am pretty sure I'd have to put the Lexus ahead.

Performance-wise the M4 wins out slightly. Looks-wise it's a push, as the M4 is probably less polarizing but also looks too much like other, less-interesting BMWs. Practicality is probably about even. Reliability, well, Lexus isn't giving that up to BMW any time soon. Price wise the Lexus wins as well.

To me, if the performance matters THAT much, then for that same money just get a C7 and call it a day. Actually just get a C7 anyway unless you want to haul your dog around in the back seat.

@VladimerDarringer...that's my point...no one goes to 'driving school' to learn to drive like that. And, if you did, you should not be driving on everyday roads like that. Most poor fools are lucky they get Driver's Ed in schools today with all the education cutbacks. Thanks, Repulicants!

@dunce_leej...you make lame excuses for how being a dumbed down driver is OK.

(1) anyone who can afford driving school can drive at a TRACK like that and (2) NEVER did I say people should drive on the street like that.

If you are a car enthusiast who does (1) not know how to drive because you've never taken classes and (2) are making excuses for not knowing how to drive well, the you need your enthusiast car revoked.

You're probably just getting home from your cottage cheese and chicken senior dinner at Dennys, but performance driving schools are not unaffordable and track time is easy to get IF you have been taught how to drive.

Driving Willow Springs is a blast. Too bad you're busy dumbing down.

These two are very close, in the end it would come down to test drives, if there are reviewers you believe in (Tiff Needlell is one I like for instance), and fellow car enthusiasts you trust. Not sure what is the deal with dismissing cars because they are from here or there or have a certain badge. Every manufacturer is making better and better cars and we are all lucky to have such great options. But I guess it is also fun to slam someone else's idea of what is a great car.
