Too Much Of A Disrupter? Ford Says They Could Build A Tesla Killer But Won't
Ford was one of the first major automakers to invest heavily in various fuel-saving technologies. This includes its lineup of EcoBoost engines, plug-in hybrids, and the pure EV Focus electric. But the latter part could change. In a recent conference call with Wall Street investment analysts, Ford CEO Mark Fields stated that his company has the technological know-how to build a full-size, high-tech, long-range and high-performance EV on par with the Tesla Model S.

Misleading subject.

From the article: ...However, he refused to say whether or not such a car will happen, only stating that "It’s consistent with our product philosophy."

According to the article, Ford didn't say the would or would not make such a car.

Not so fast, bucko! Do you think the only reason why BMW doesn't build pickup trucks is because they can't? Or is it possible there could be other reasons, such as:
- Inconsistent with our corporate image
- Don't have the infrastructure to support it
- We believe the target audience is too small to be profitable for us

There could be a number of reasons why Ford doesn't go in this direction, aside from "we can't do it." Unless we have hard facts, we're just guessing.

(BTW, I'm not a Ford fanboi. I just see alternate perspectives)/

Why would Ford build paper weights? As a % of sales Tesla is INSIGNIFICANT. A Fusion Energi loaded is a great argument against the 100% unproven Tesla S.

Not long ago Ford admitted that they reverse engineered a Tesla. Tesla already opened up their patents so all the other companies could use them, so yes if ford wanted to they could build a Tesla. The Fusion as with most current Ford products will be riddled with recalls and lowered mileage forecasts, not to mention the same look as an average Fusion.
What they should have said is that they won't build one at a reasonable price point and suffer losses like Chevy did with the Volt.

1 - In the $100,000 price range - A Lincoln that could compete with Tesla would simply not sell - Lincoln could not support that price range. Add that to the fact that they do not need another car that sells in LOW numbers at Lincoln - and YOU can understand WHY Lincoln would NOT build such a car.

2 - However - eventually - there will be cars with good performance and electric range that will make Tesla all but a High Priced option.

3 - If Chevy or Ford could produce a VOLT type car - with at least 100 mile range on electric instead of Fords 10-20 - and Chevy's 30-35 - Tesla would not be able to sell their low market car. I expect the new Volt to have over 40 and maybe close to 45 mile electric range - which would actually be enough for a lot of commuters. And THAT car would be consistent with being a FORD or Chevy. I suspect that unless there is some major breakthrough in internal combustion engine technology we do not yet know of - a plug in Hybrid will be the way larger cars will survive.

The market for these vehicles simply isn't robust.
