Is Lincoln Ever Going To Be Cool Again?

Lincoln’s been on a bit of a media blitz lately. It hired Matthew McConaughey to spout some zen aphorisms about progress and its new MKC then – after the spot inspired a fair amount of mockery and a memorable SNL parody – starting fielding press inquiries about the measurable (as in, 25%) bump in sales.

Thing is, it’s been a long time since Lincoln was cool on the strength of its products alone - Carter was in office if that puts it in perspective. The last Lincoln Continental Town Car rolled off the line in 1978. That car was nineteen-and-a-half feet and 5,500 pounds of velour–lined Yankee grandeur. Unwieldy and inefficient enough to trigger a gas crisis, that behemoth oozed excess. Slipping behind the wheel of a 3–ton two–door was an act of indulgence on par with bathing in a hot tub. Gratuitous, sure, but goddam American.

Having someone who eerily acts like a serial killer in a commercial for your product is probably not a smart move. Right...the Advertising Execs claim to love all the attention...seriously...do they not know everyone is laughing at them? And not in a good way?

Cool is as cool does. Do something cool Lincoln. Make a cool car not the cookie cutter plain Jane makeover Fords you are dolling out now.
If you don't you will be gone in five years or less!

Lincoln needs to make itself quirky. Currently it is just fancy Ford's. It needs to be different and stand out.

I like the new Navigator.

But I don't really see anyone driving a Navigator to be honest. I see more Escalades.

Lincoln is relying too much on history. The MKZ and MKC are a good start but there's a lot more work to be done. Cadillac does a better job of differentiating their cars from Chevys.

There remains a market in the USA for a Large (120 cu.ft interior) RWD Luxury car (The last two S class cars were this big inside) - with ample trunk space - that does not have to be a Sports car at the same time. My guess is the that CT6 will - based on comments from GM - be another small inside - no trunk "athletic" car that will not fill that space. A longer Lexus LS car would be what could do it.

And Lincoln could produce such a car - and sell a lot of them in the context of Cadillac CTS sales.

Lincoln is just Fancy Fords as Buick is just Fancy Chevys - but that has been true for decades.

Some day - some one will actually define their market as LUXURY cars and target that market instead of Sports Cars that have some luxury - as Cadillac has done so far. Example - they cannot make enough Escalades - it is an overpriced - fancier - Yukon Denali - and they sell every one of them. YOU cannot accuse it of being a sports car either.

I see nothing wrong with Cadillac or Lincoln addressing a really Large Luxury size market for a car - taking back that Limo car market - and yes even acknowledging that even Old Folks buy cars - because they have the money.

Return to names but not "legacy" names. Lincoln Sentinel had a good ring to it.

Return to RWD.

Make only hotrod Lincolns and don't worry about going "green".

Let Fords be Fords.

A formula that might work-
RWD and AWD
Trunk big enough for bodies, easy to clean
The smallest model starts at the size of the late Crown Vic
Modern fuel economy/efficiency in every way
V8 models only
Base models satisfy any Mafia/government agent car needs
Suicide door options

Not using serial killer portrayals as a reference point for advertising would be a good start.

They can tap the poor-mans-Bentley market like Chrysler did with the 1990's Daimler hack, only this one might last longer than 50000 miles. Or, bring back the crown vic as an all-aluminum body add independent rear suspension and eco-boost the crap out of every model. Instant hit with police and taxi, government and livery applications once again.
