CAR WARS! WHICH Sports Car Has The Better DESIGN? Chevrolet Corvette Z06 vs. Toyota FT-1

CAR WARS! WHICH Sports Car Has The Better DESIGN? Chevrolet Corvette Z06 vs. Toyota FT-1
Now I know that some of you will send some flak my way, but hear me out before you start slinging mud.

First off, in today's design world we pretty much see production cars emulate their concepts. It's been made quite clear that the FT-1 is essentially the upcoming Supra.

Second, the Chevrolet Corvette is a really "out there" design. That's not a bad thing, but it definitely shows us that General Motors was more than happy to take a risk and, my, my the company has been rewarded for it. Sales of the C7 Stingray are THROUGH the roof. Just think, the Z06 hasn't even arrived yet.

Now, to the debate.

Both autos are tried and true sports cars. The Z06 is a very in your face design for a production model and we assume that the slightly zany FT-1/Supra will be toned down a bit before it hits showrooms. While the 'Vette is a bit of a mix of old-school muscle with a twist of new age elements, the FT-1 is shooting for the stars in its quest to look "like the batmobile," as one commenter here noted.

So, WHICH sports car has the BETTER design?

Will the Corvette age well with its mix of new age styling and retro cues? Or, would you rather have the FT-1's F1 car meets LFA look?

I would say it is the Z06 for the following reason. The mission for the C7 was to design a car that both broke new ground in terms of design, separated itself from the previous generation and appealed to those that like edgy Euro styling, but was still, without question, a Corvette. That means finding a difficult balance. People that know Vettes will recognize it instantly as the latest and greatest version of the car they love. People that don't know them will nevertheless notice a fresh, attractive sports car that looks like it means serious business.

I was driving my C7 just outside of town, out in the countryside, and a guy mowing his lawn on his tractor stopped as I drove past, giving me a double thumbs-up. I promise you, he would not have done that if the C7 did not, despite its newness, still look like a Corvette should.

The FT-1 has a simpler mission. To look really spiffy. It doesn't need to look like a Toyota, let alone a Supra, and therefore its design challenge is, to me, simpler. It doesn't have to please old fans while trying to win over new ones in the same way. It's got a lot less to lose. That's why it's so extreme. Does it look sweet? Sure, I'd be happy to drive something so futuristic looking. And outside of any context, it's probably a push as to which of the two cars would be found more visually attractive. At the Detroit show this year, I found both the Z06 and the FT-1 pretty impressive. I wanted the Z06 more but it was for reasons besides the look. But judging against what both of the designs actually needed to do, I think the Z06 came closer to success than the FT-1.

Concept vs. the real car? Sounds like a stupid war.

But honestly, when this Toyota comes out, no way I would choose a Corvette over that.

Corvette hands down. The Toyota is way too busy and overwrought with aero jib jabs. The only really good area is the greenhouse which is quite nice.

dear writer of this article,

In this day and age it's not a very good idea to insult our intelligence and ask such a question. Toyota never had a good design.

Toyota went from adding a fantasy luxury line called Lexus for those who had talent of easily imagining themselves in luxury cars, then adding cheaper line calling it Scion and the designs, that's if you can be kind to call them designs, got worse with every model addition.

While this one looks OK to pass as a sports car, the market already has shit load to offer with better designs, especially Corvette. So this is a car that doesn't to be produced, it's better off staying a concept and fantasy, it fits Toyota better. They're usually good at creating fantasy anyways. The entire Lexus line is a pure example of their talent of creating fantasy.

So what do you think of Lexus benz4life?

Corvette. The only thing needing fixing are the rear tail lights, whereas the Toyota is a mess from bumper to bumper

The Toyota is a total mess......the Vette wins hands down...

The Corvette by far.

The face of the Toyota is hideous. The side is overdramatic . The tail is good looking but it's copied froma TVR Sagaris.

The Supra will come to market as dull and flawed as the GT86 just watch.

I say the winner in your contest goes to the Toyota. While the Corvette redesign is an improvement over the outgoing model, Toyota has still bested it (although the silver Vette looks better than the yellow one) One thing GM could never do was Interior design, and this is so evidenced in this Corvette...just GM boring and bland. Let's also not hold our breaths for the impending GM recalls.

The C7 Corvette is a tank. Most everything in its design it over done and heavily executed. The rear end is a qualified hideous failure. It is hard on the eyes.
I look forward to the next redesign of this failed C7 design.

The concept looks cooler obviously but it's that, a concept and has a long way to go to production reality.

design wise, I would take the FT-1, if it does indeed look like that. The Corvette looks like they added bits and pieces to differentiate itself from the Stingray. Having said that, I saw one recently at an auto show and it does look nice, but how do you compare concept to production form? It's a difficult decision.

When you see the final production design from Toyota you will say "What happened?" Until then the C7 wins the reality design contest hands down.

Sciros - the guy mowing the lawn who gave you the thumbs up was also wearing a wife beater, brown socks with loafers, and drinking cheap beer.

Sorry, I think you forgot to mention that!

Indeed it was not a rich part of town. People live on modest means there. I have nothing against them. Do you? The Corvette has an appeal to people even if they aren't absurdly rich because the Corvette is not seen as unattainable, and the Corvette is still about as American as cars get, in every sense of the term, for what it's worth.
