Is Audi About To Have a Design Dilemma?
Audi's upcoming LA Auto Show Concept is big for the brand and Marc Lichte, Audi's new design chief. The concept is entirely his work and Audi appears to have given Marc significant freedom in shaping its future design. It's refreshing to see a supremely successful brand admit that it has erred and could do better with its design. Although its closest competitors have recently leaned more on the Audi design formula (clone and evolve) than their fans want to admit, it appears that the brand has extracted all that it could from it. The few glimpses of the concept promise the most powerful and impactful Audi design since the Walter de Silva designed A5. The future looks promising but Audi could have a mess to explain if the long overdue and delayed Q7 and the comparatively just slightly overdue A4 aren't true products of the new design direction. If the concept is as great as anticipated, good luck explaining to the public why your newest products don't match it. An awkward moment to have for a brand whose cars supposedly "all look alike". Of course this could all be a real tease and the change might not be nearly as drastic as promised.

This news is nothing more than a "re-tread". EVERY single auto manufacturer uses a common theme in their car line-up. Like the articles on the Acura "beak", let's put these "design" headlines to rest please and write something informative. You're supposed to be "Autospies". Every other month we get something about car company similarity designs. I have a new flash: I can practically tell each car company, by their similar features throughout their model line-up. Cadillac: has the angular headlines that all look the same; Nissan is now using that same grill and headlights that recently came out of their Pathfinder. Ford is using that Fusion nose, pillar look; even on their new Mustang; MB seems to be using that whatever you call that melted front end fascia on their C-class; E-class; S-class and everything else. BMW has the kidney, squinted look in their headlights and now all of those UGLY "X" model SUV hatchbacks; Toyota - it's so hard to tell the difference between the Corrola, Camry and Avalon front ends. Audi does the same thing too.

Heck - even the Maserati Ghibli looks like it's other cars in the line-up. Do we wish car makers would be a little more "creative" in their designs among their models. Of course we do, but that would cut into profits for these automakers. Please give me some real auto news.

A lot of brands are using this approach now. IF anything Audi might have a few models out of sync once this new direction comes in. It would be cool if Audi had this new design direction on the A4 but so far the spy shots don't show that. This would make the Q7 and A4 somewhat of orphans depending on how big the change is.

All car companie look ALIKE; NOT just Audi. I can look at my old BMW pictures and they all had the kidney grill; every Ford, Every Toyota, Every MB has these common traits in their line-ups. Of course they just change the headlights or taillights ever so slightly, and say all "new". This is BS and we ALL know this.

My 2007 Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner has changed hardly at all over the past 3 generations. As a matter of fact, my 2007 looks EXACTLY like the 2014 now except tail lights and headlights (more square now). Toyota is even running the same 4.0 V6 since 2005 in these trucks. Heck Chevy's cars have looked nearly the same for 15 years now. It's bottom line profits by making minimal changes.

Design? You mean they actually Pay someone to make all the cars look the same?

A Kindergarten kid would do that for a piece of candy - and probably do just as well too!

Audi is ALREADY in their design dilemma. The new TT is indistinguishable from the old TT. The New A3 looks like the old A3 except now it has a trunk. The new Audi grille is pathetic. They need Johan de Nysschen back!

The 3 and 5 series have identical lines and I saw a new 3 next to the old and there wasn't any bigger difference than the current A4 and the last one. The C class is a mini S though both look great. Audi might have been guiltier at this than the other German brands but not really any more and more or less admits that a change is coming.

Oh no, they need anything but definitely NOT Johan de Nysschen! He will probably start charging all the models' names if he's back! Please, let him stay at where he's at right now!

From the sneak peek I've seen, it seems Audi put a lot of their design efforts into... you guessed it: Weird looking headlights!
