Toyota's New Sports Car May Cost More Than A Corvette - But Will It Be Able To Out Perform It?

We've heard plenty about BMW's version of their jointly-developed sports car but new details are starting to emerge about Toyota's variant.

According to one of Car & Driver's sources, the upcoming model will likely cost more than the Chevrolet Corvette. Considering the 2015 Corvette starts at $54,995 - including a $995 destination and handling charge - the upcoming sports car could be one of the most expensive Toyota-branded coupes ever created.

Where do you insert the .25 quarter to play this arcrade car game? Looks like something from a computer game. Yes, Toyota IS using drugs.

Toyota has little pent up demand for a new Supra...particularly one so far out from the mainstream. Once the small hardcore Supra rice rocket fan base buy theirs the remainder will sit in show rooms begging for buyers. The Corvette has 60 years of heritage, race wins, songs singing its praises, lead roles in tv shows and movies, garments galore bearing its image, etc etc and presently the best sports car for the money bar none. Price it low Toyota or severely limit the output otherwise second year sales will fall faster than the Dow Jones in 2007.

In a word: NO.

Look at the GTR. It's not radically more adept than a Stingray despite costing TWICE as much.

If this is supposed to be a Toyota, then the Supra needed to be a $35-50K product and not cost more than a Stingray. That is Lexus territory.

GT-R already surpasses Corvette in every way.

@JDMUSMuscle not by much you dimwit. Corvette = $60K the GTR is slightly faster and slightly better handling but in no way worth $120K. Yeah we know you shove your hand in you pants at the posters of the GTR in your bedroom, but the reality is that its prowess is more hype than reality.

i dont get the point of this thread, plenty of cars cost more than the corvette and dont outperform it like a base 911, boxster, cayman, M4... and a whole bunch of other ones.
why cant the ft-1 cost more ?
its just one of the decisions a consumer will have to make when cross shopping.. if the ft-1 costs more than a corvette but is 2+2, id get it over the corvette just because i need the extra seats so people buy things for different reasons..
if the vette was 2+2 i cant imagine looking at anything else, drove the new stringray and loved it !

Umm if this thing costs more than Corvette money then it better be a beast because Toyota already has the Lexus RC-F coming out.

In any case it's going to be hard-pressed to outperform a Z51 Stingray. And if it costs $80k then it's going toe to toe with the Z06 in which case forget it.

But hey, more competition is never a bad thing. Let's see what we get.

This Toyota is meant to be the new Supra. And we all know Supra is a legend.

This car will be the ultimate driving machine.

Even if the performace doesn't surpass the corvette, who cares! It's a supra.
People arent cross shopping an m4 and a sting ray even though they're similar in price.
But can the m4 compete with the corvette in performance ? Does it matter ?

Buy what you want, but at that price, it not only needs to better the "plastic fantastic" on the track, but also at the pump. The vette is also pretty easy to drive with all of that low-end torque.
