When the Chinese market cools down and the auto industry significantly
contracts the brands that have been true to their heritage and brand values will survive best. Moving these premium brands' manufacturing offshore diminishes their heritage/values/mystique. It would generate short term profits at the expense of long term strength, margins and exclusivity. Would you really pay a premium price for a Rolls-Royce, Ferrari, Bentley, Porsche or Lamborghini built in China, America or Korea? Didn't think so. VW has spread its resources thin with so many brands and is forcing its premium brands to make up for the ever
shrinking margins of its low end mass market brands. A better strategy would be to make every Bentley and Lamborghini bespoke...built to customer order and specification. Higher prices, extremely lower volume/capacity, fewer dealers, higher margins and higher absolute profits. Ferrari independent of Fiat will likely follow this strategy while Lamborghini and Bentley will be squeezed by VW. Which of these brands do think will be most valuable in 15 years? Thought so!
