#LAAUTOSHOW - Mercedes-Maybach S600 Debuts - Will THIS Give Rolls-Royce and Bentley Sales A Scare?
Its last attempt at a Rolls-Royce rival was a commercial flop, but at the 2014 LA motor show today Mercedes proved it was ready for another go, resurrecting the Maybach brand for a second time with a luxury-laden S-class limo.

Priced at around £30-40k more than the current range-topping long-wheelbase S600, the circa £170k Mercedes-Maybach S-class gets a further 200mm of metal between the wheels and has, Mercedes design chief Gordon Wagener claims, the quietest rear cabin of any production car in the world.

Apart from the extra wheelbase, the Maybach S-class will come with unique reclining rear seats, leather covering almost every single surface bar the floor and the glass, and offer endless scope for personalisation.

Compared with the last Maybach, which lasted from 2002 to 2011, the new car is consciously less gauche. At the front, a Maybach badge sits atop a grille featuring paired bars, but in no way shouts that this is anything other than a regular S-class. The big changes are at the rear, where the sheet metal has undergone changes to provide occupants with maximum privacy. An extra window is squeezed into the C-pillar, which also brandishes the Maybach badge, and rear passengers sit cocooned behind the shut line of the rear door.

Rolls and Bentley are pissing themselves with laughter over this turd.

I wouldn't go that far. But I believe they're not in the least bit concerned.

It just occurred to me that the MB Maybach and VW Phaeton are running parallels: Each manufacturer created a lone vehicle that looks a lot like what they make today, but is positioned to compete in a market that's a lot more expensive. Both failed to make meaningful sales the first time around. Both are doing a round 2, virtually identical to what they did the first time.

Maybach failed not because the brand is bad. But because there was an issue with the styling and the price. Rolls-Royce obviously was a better choice compared to a Maybach.

And Phaeton is about a completely different story. When VW has an Audi or a Porsche, who would buy an overpriced VW?

And this Maybach trim will be just 30~40k price difference compared to the normal S class, and I don't see why it would not sell. Especially when there are many American rappers who worship Maybach (There is even a recording company named Maybach. That says a lot already).

As long as there are those American rappers and celebrities who worship the mighty European brands, they will not fail. Not to mention this Maybach trim will be affordable compared to a Ghost as well.

And not only that, Germany is now the most respected nation in the entire world.

http://www.gfk.com/news-and-events/press-room/press-releases/pages/germany-knocks-usa-off-best-nation-top-spot.aspx

When the rich Americans abandoned the U.S. industries and started worshipping the European brands so greatly, now the U.S. looks so weak. Very weak.

Hey look a long wheel-base S class just like the last Maybach, and that worked out real well from Benz.

Let's see, Rolls and Bentley were forced to sell themselves due to lack of profit.

Mercedes was able to launch Maybach and found that even with lackluster sells, the brand carried heavy weight in pop culture, Hollywood, and the 1% despite less than a decade on the market.

This time round Mercedes wised up, instead of launching an all new dealer network and branding the Maybach as more than it actually was...both costing hundreds of millions...Mercedes realizes the S Class is the most DOMINANT luxury vehicle in the world with a cult like following, why not make a Maybach Trim.

This option saved benz hundreds of millions and I do believe they will have the last laugh, and unlike Rolls/Bentley, it didn't cost them their independence...

Mercedes IS a world class car company, possibly "the" finest on the planet...no doubt and who they are is not in question. However Rolls & Bentley have more cache and exclusivity, especially with the CLA clown car in MB's line up. This is a stretched S-Class and calling it Maybach will do zero. Its nothing more than a stretched Town Car and instead of calling it a limo you call it Maybach. It will appeal to the "livery crowd" but not the $$ crowd. Another super expensive flop for Mercedes. Though a name is not everything, if they had called it the Mercedes 600 that might have been another story....

This segment is all about selling the "new thing" to the buyers with the bucks (or euros or dinar or whatever). The Flying Spur was the new thing 10 yrs ago and demand has cooled. The Phantom was the new thing for a few years then the RR Ghost had a short day in the sun. Nobody ever cared about the old maybach because it was obviously an old, outdated platform with old styling.

The S600 Maybach is "new", its based on the truly iconic/successful S-Class. There is no badge engineering here - its based on (heck it IS) the best car in the segment. For customers who want the most of what they want this is the perfect product.

MB will definitely have to offer a 4-Matic variant though - maybe an S5504Matic Maybach or an S63 4Matic Maybach. They will give up a big amount of sales in the US if it isn't AWD. Otherwise its going to do great!

Kia's flagship K900 turned out to be a huge flop already. S class already sold around 20k units in the U.S. alone this year.

But yes, let us hope people will realize the fact that the Japanese luxury car like Lexus LS and the American luxury vehicle like Cadillac Escalade provide far more value than the S class.

A Mercedes is not a Rolls Royce nor is it a Bentley. There is something about the exclusivity of those last two that even Mercedes simply cannot offer. It really makes no difference if the car they make is measurably better - the panache' is simply not the same. That the new Maybach is also Less expensive than either of the others is just another reason why it cannot compete.
It is possible the car will sell well - but it will not compete with Rolls or Bentley in the minds of the rich - and that is what matters to them. Actually - I believe the name itself - is a problem - because it is uniquely german - and has no pretentious meaning in English. The Maybach sold well in the Mid-east - but nowhere else. I think Calling it a 600 would have been a better choice

This will be a GIANT FAILURE just like the previous Maybach. The market has proven that people don't want to pay $250K+ for a car that looks like a stretched version of a $100K car.

Looks like Mercedes-Benz never learned its lesson the first time around. Rolls Royce and Bentley have nothing to worry about here. Their heritage and visual appeal is far too great to even lose sleep over this.

What a joke. The whole point of a Rolls or Bentley is exclusivity. They don't look like a $100k cars. This does.

t's sad when even see how people are ignorant! the problem with the Maybach was just a matter of disign and that's all.
The Maybach is far more beautiful, look at this luxury finish, even former Maybach is still far more beautiful than a Rolls today.
Maybach is not also known as the Rolls, the Rolls has the particular advantage of the name, its history, of course it does not remove the build quality, the absolute luxury. but saying that a fresh start with "Maybach" has to be seen positively and do not forget that Rolls is a BMW for technology but Maybach is a Mercedes !!!
This is just a new marketing strategy to recognize the name of MAYBACH in the future there will be an even more luxurious model MAYBACH that has nothing at all to do or to have with the S-class, just like AMG has to do with the GT.

Bingo. The plan is to one day create a one-off vehicle to show what Mercedes can do at the very top of the market. This is just the beginning. They bit off more than they can chew last time and they did it it with a car that was outdated the min the W221 was shown in 2005.

The S class is amazing looks wise. On point. But this doesn't work that well because you are past its limit design wise. If anything the Maybach actually looks more impressive.

I thought they were going to revive the spirit of the Mercedes 600 from 1963 to 1981. That would have been the Mercedes of Mercedes.

This site just continues to prove how dumb it's posters are. This car is a totally different take on the Maybach name. What is so hard to grasp here? This car is clearly a S-Class, a S600 to be exact, it isn't trying to be a Phantom or Mulsane competitor. Mercedes basically says this in the press release that they aren't going after ultra-luxury buyers and those cars. This is a Rolls Ghost EWB competitor. It won't be priced at 400K, it isn't based on a 10 year old S-Class design like the previous Maybachs were. This car is based on the best luxury car in the world right now the W222 S-Class. It will be priced at 200K or so (right at what a S65 AMG costs) and the tech is cutting edge. China is going to buy this car in droves because of their obsession with anything with an extended wheelbase. All of you that say Mercedes didn't learn their less are just dumb as hell. This is totally different effort and all you keep talking about is how the last car flopped. Think about why it flopped and then look at this car and then think. Totally different car, marketing theme, pricing, everything. Damn you people are limited here.
