#LAAUTOSHOW: Does The 2016 Acura ILX's INTERIOR Hold Up Well Against The A3 And CLA-Class?
In the world of luxury cars, interiors matter quite a bit. There's good reason for this: this is where buyer's spend a majority of their time. You better believe they're going to want to like where they settle in.

If I am honest, I have to say that I've never really fallen in love with Acura's best efforts. I don't know, they always seem a bit too Honda-ish for my taste.

2014 Los Angeles Auto Show #LAAS

And looking at the newly revamped ILX, it appears to be more of the same. It's a dash of Honda with a bit of Subaru, if you ask me. In my opinion, I don't think it can hold a candle to the likes of the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class; however, I will leave that up to you to decide.

That's because both of those German autos have been widely criticized for their cabins. So, what say you?

Is the ILX's cockpit class competitive or a MISS?

An excerpt from Acura's press release follows:

...The 2016 ILX also benefits from numerous interior upgrades, including contrasting Euro-style stitching on the steering wheel, parking brake handle and shift knob, as well as new high-intensity silver trim for the passenger-side instrument panel. The ILX A-SPEC package enhances the exceptional cabin appeal and appointments with an exclusive Premium Black interior color scheme including black headliner, perforated black Lux Suede® seat inserts, red instrument illumination, exclusive gray interior stitching and aluminum brake and throttle pedals...

No. No it does not. The high arching center console, extreme amount of unused space around the lower display and not knowing if it's going for curves or angles all really detract from this. Just doesn't do it for me.

Looks like what it is. A civic with some luxury-looking bits. Who would really choose this over the Merc or Audi. A3 would have my money.

these interiors are about as lame as you can get. sweeps and curves and complete lack of attention to detail = honda civic interior or KIA. Honda and Acura are a complete waste of time when it comes to design vision. A3 is light years ahead of this. Germans understand design. This was probably American design, just junk design

You can tell "Previewed" must own a Honda. He marked everyone down because they spoke the truth here. Just like others have complained about Audit or Cadillac, this exterior design is a direct clone of the TLX. This is why I've said ALL car companies use a common design theme throughout their car line-up. BMW, Audi, Cadillac, Lexus, ACURA. Please no more threads about how that car company's cars all look alike. They ALL do this.

You make a point @previewed.

There's just one thing. VW's base interior in the Golf is better than the RLX.

00R, I'd have to respectfully disagree with you on that Golf/RLX comparison. I've seen both and both are very nice. Granted, that's more of a statement of how nice they did make the new Golf interior vs any type of reference to the RLX interior being inferior. IMO, the RLX interior is every bit as nice as the Lexus GS interior, except for maybe the richness of color choices (then again, I don't know what your opinion is of the GS interior).

Delusional? No.

It's an opinion. Doesn't mean you have to agree and/or like it.

Acura/Honda interiors while they've been trending better are still not that great in terms of the quality of leather, touch points and how they wear over time.

Go look on a used car lot and check out how much SHEEN there is on the leather surfaces. Looks like someone dropped a bottle of Armor All on the interiors...

Again, 00R, have to respectfully disagree with you. I know tons of folks with older Acuras and the interior finish looks just as good (and in some cases, better) as the guys I know driving around in older Bimmers, Audis or Benzes.

After experiencing all 3 in person, the answer is yes, absolutely, even before the recent update by Acura.

The interior is nice, but the Acura exteriors are horrible. I went to the LA autoshow today and it was a sad sight at Acura. They had this giant space right in the middle and there wasn't a single soul looking at them. I took a picture because I couldn't believe it. Then I turned 90 degrees to look at Infiniti and there were about 100 people in their space. The poor Acura girl was on stage doing the talk about the ILX and she had to pretend there were people listening. They really need an overhaul.

Of course there were people at Infiniti. They had their Panamera-fighting concept on display. If Acura had an NSX on display, I'm sure things would have been different.

This is why I enjoy going to the New York Auto Show on consumer days. Always insightful to see where people are flocking and spending time.

Typically Acura is lighter than the likes of the Germans and Lexus, but usually there's a few people that are clearly looking to buy and experience the auto.

What a waste of space inside this car. They moved the "bird beak" from outside (toning that down) to INSIDE now with the bulging dash. This is why I personally would rather have a clean, not over-the-top interiors. You end up getting something like this car, or the Toyota RAV4's ugly dash. I'll stay with my BMW's and Audi's beautiful and simple interiors.

Why are you comparing this to the CLA or A3? Those cars top out in their 40s (high performance models in the 50s and 60s). The ILX starts at 26k and tops out at 33k...please compare apples to apples, and stop trolling this site with the German vs Asian automaker threads.

@leej

They are class competitive. Buyers determine what tickles their fancy via sales.

I am not going to ignore that these are class competitors because you're too sensitive or PC. It's your type of thinking that's close minded and is actually destructive.

And, you further prove you're a moron by stating the ranges these cars price out at. There's plenty of buyers that will CONSIDER getting the ABSOLUTE base CLA or A3 just to have the badge in their driveway, but will instead go and snap up an ILX happily as it is a value purchase.

No - and I'm a Honda/Acura fan...

They fixed up the outside somewhat but the interior has gotten worse with the addition of Acura's two screen dash. Awful on every Honda/Acura so no different here...

I agree with the consensus here, a lot of wasted space (around the screen) and I'm sure the materials aren't as rich...on the bright side, I'm sure it is built well and won't fall apart like some of its competitors - not that the majority of buyers of those cars care when they usually lease and not buy.

Wow, sensitive much Agent00r? There is almost a $10k price point difference in these cars comparably equipped as I mentioned. LOL, I am neither 'sensitive' nor am I PC. No one is going to cross-shop a German low-end model with the brand recognition of Mercedes or BMW and this Acura...unless they are just auto-ignorant. And look how many of the people here call the CLA interior 'cheap' or the Audi A3 spartan and cramped. There is an Audi A3 convertible on the local dealer lot here priced at $47k. Same interior as the $34k Audi A3. The lowest price CLA I have seen locally has been $35k. Most are in the low 40s though. I think you need to buck it up and realize you are pushing the envelope on this one.

All that aside, the IL will be more reliable and cost less to maintain...so that frugal $32k CLA/A3 shopper might want to think twice and save their money.

Most buyers are auto ignorant. This has been proven countless times.

Non-enthusiasts are either shopping based on $, badge, mpg or perceived reliability.

Who cares about the A3 convertible? We're talking about the sedans. Stay on topic.

Good point on maintenance.

Well that's just a completely uninformed comment about the photography.

We're always observing our competitors pics and ours ALWAYS trump theirs. In addition, the LA event is religiously difficult to shoot due to the lighting in the building.

Fair enough, cidflekken. It wasn't just Infiniti (they just so happened to be next to them). EVERY automaker, including Smart Car, had people walking around. This was in the middle of the day and Acura couldn't get a single person to walk by and look.

Not disagreeing with you balldoc. Yes, Acura needs to step up their "excitement" game, no doubt. They definitely need to make a goal of introducing something that attracts tons of attention at each major auto show for the next few years until they rebuild their brand and reputation.

That being said, when I was at the LA Auto Show a few years ago, there were moments when there was no one at the BMW and Audi displays so I seized the opportunity to look at and get into any car I pleased. But I could barely get into some of the Acuras or Infinitis. Later, the BMW displays were packed and Acura and Infiniti were like ghost towns. So, the traffic can be cyclical with auto shows. Same thing happened at a recent fitness Expo I attended where the most popular brand, with the largest display had no visitors for a few minutes, then had tons of visitors the next.
