BMW Ponders Increasing i8 Sports Car Production To Meet Demand
BMW may have to increase production of its i8 plug-in hybrid sports car to meet high demand.

The waiting time for the 120,000 euro coupe is up to 18 months, BMW sales and marketing chief Ian Robertson said.

"We need to find ways to increase i8 production because the waiting lists in some markets are getting too long,” Robertson told Automotive News Europe at the auto show here on Wednesday.

Robertson said six months is as long as customers should have to wait for a built-to-order premium model.

It is a fantastic car; one of the best out there.

If BMW wants to know how many to produce, they should research how many Tesla's have been sold and produce that many in the next two years, so all those Tesla owners can trade in and get an i8.

This i8 is officially is "the next new thing".

Yep, I've been targeting my $120K budget for a 911, but I've decided to redirect it towards the i8 instead (most likely a 2nd generation model by the time I have the cash LOL).

BMW would be wise to build a convertible version of this. It will not only suck in all the Tesla owners (who have all just realized they are driving a $100,000, fast, Toyota Avalon with no dealer network [and I guess no Takeda airbags]) but it will totally cannibalize the 911's customer base.

I sat in one at BMW Manhattan and its really, really awesome. I think the coolest part of it, is how they left the carbon fiber structure semi-exposed (I think the varnished it) so you see the "skeleton". Very cool.

This car is so cool, so "new", and so "of the moment" it is going to be revolutionary for BMW. This is the most significant BMW since the first X5 14 years ago. They can cancel that i3 turd and just focus all the production resources on this one. Anybody agree?
