The Best Award Money Can Buy? Chevy Colorado Ousts F-150 As Motor Trend Truck Of The Year

You might have figured Ford's new all-aluminum F-150 would be a shoo-in for Motor Trend's 2015 Truck of the Year award, but you'd be wrong. General Motors had its own all-new truck in the running and that vehicle, the mid-sized Chevrolet Colorado, took the prize.

The Colorado is GM's new model that's designed to compete against trucks like the Toyota Tacoma and the Nissan Frontier. Neither Ford (F) nor Chrysler Group (FCAU)'s Ram truck brand offer trucks this size any longer. It is smaller than the full-size Chevrolet Silverado truck.

It's a fairly bare bones "simple" pickup in most trims.

That just means GM paid money to Motor Trend to make it happen.

This truck will help your effort to remain anonymous on the road. Might as well have the little GM badge on the side, that would really make it stand out.
Can't really say it gets great gas mileage, the whole "better pickup" contest is a bit of a stretch. All pickups are massively overpriced, even the "bare bones" work trucks.
Someone will re-invent the small pickup and get next year's award.

This is a car with no competition right now. If you want a well built truck that is not the size of an aircraft carrier but has post-2008 technology then this is the only game in town. It's not cheap but the full-size trucks are much more expensive still. The Colorado (and its GMC cousin) also looks alright, all things considered. And it has the 8-speed that's in the Corvette. Why you guys are all butthurt over this truck beating the aluminum F-150 is beyond me. I'd take this over any other truck in a heartbeat.

Correction: it doesn't get the 8-speed. The bigger trucks get that one. Makes sense, I guess. Anyway that's not a big deal for a midsize pickup, you don't need a tranny that can handle 1000 lb-ft of torque.

3 years from now, my bet is that one will look back and see that the F150 is the truck of the century. Ram and GM will quickly follow suit with aluminum. MotorTrend needs to reevaluate their criteria. Their track record on picking good vehicles is pretty shoddy.
