A Turn To The Dark Side? UAW Wins Right To Repesent Workers At VW Chatanooga Plant

The UAW has been officially certified as the representative of more than 45% of Volkswagen's workers in Chattanooga, Tenn., giving the union the ability to discuss a broad range of workplace issues with the German automaker under a new labor policy unveiled last month.

It is a big win for the UAW because it is a strong foothold in a foreign-owned southern plant. The union has a history of failed attempts to become the certified bargaining union in such a plant.

VW is so screwed. Nothing good can come of this.

VW does not know that letting the union control your business is moronic. The Chattanooga plant will be sold to SAIC/Nanjing just watch and the Chinese will have the balls to crush the union.

The UAW is an anathema to workers.

I think they know exactly what they are doing. Basically the UAW is on a short leash and other Unions can represent the workers as well.

UAW's role is very limited in this case.

Of course the UAW is just happy to get a foot in the door to get union dues.

VW has union representation on its German board of directors and to keep peace within its tent it yielded to pressure to unionize this facility. What it does not realize is that union leaders in America are do not play by the same rules as European unions and and life just got more complicated.
