Report Says California Is Responsible For Almost Half Of All EV Sales - What Will It Take To Move It To Mainstream?
The Energy Department said Wednesday that nearly half of all electric vehicles sold in the United States are purchased in California.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration noted that in 2013, there were 70,000 battery electric vehicles in the United States and 104,000 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles registered in the United States — out of 226 million vehicles registered in the United States. “Total U.S. sales of plug-in electric vehicles have increased in recent years, but still represent only about 0.7 percent of new vehicle sales in 2014 so far, up from 0.6 percent in 2013 and 0.4 percent in 2012.”

It's more of an attitude thing and not anything that the government can or really should do. They tax credits are about as far as the gov should go as they seem to perk up interest.

or are you suggesting we invest more heavily in light rail?

LA used to have an amazing light rail system before GM bought it up and dismantled it.

It will take a generational change; i.e. a couple of decades. The current millennials have the most interest in electrics, and are not generally as wedded to cars as the Boomers and GenX. They are repopulating cities, open to public transportation and into Zip Car and Uber. The problem is most of the millenials don't have the earning power to be able to afford the current crop of electrics if they even want to own a vehicle. Plus the skyrocketing renewable based electricity rates (up 29% next year where I live) make the economics tougher. As a boomer, electrics and even hybrid electrics don't fit into our lifestyle. Try to force us to change and we vote for the other guy.

A miracle? Gas at $20/gallon? People forgetting that 70% of those "clean electricity" generating stations are burning garbage or fossil fuel, so maybe when more people forget that, EVs will look more attractive.
