A Steal Of A Deal? New Maybach S-Class To Start At Only $166,700

Mercedes-Benz set the starting price of the Maybach S-Class sedan at 134,100 euros ($166,700), including value-added tax, and began taking orders for the would-be challenger to Rolls-Royce and Bentley.

The Maybach, which is longer than the standard S-Class, will reach showrooms in February, the division of Stuttgart, Germany-based Daimler AG (DAI) said today in a statement.

After abundant feedback that the Maybach looked like a stretched S-Class with some added niceties and a price tag that just few felt was justified, Mercedes Benz threw in the towel with the Maybach brand, and called a spade a spade: It's a stretched S-Class with some added niceties, and it's priced accordingly.

Welcome Mercedes Benz S600, Maybach Edition.

It doesn't need to challenge Rolls Royce or Bentley. It's just fine where it stands.

Correct. That's the V8 version the S600 Maybach starts at 187k Euro. Comparing the US pricing that should be around 190k in the US to start. It's one time the stupid basic German market to US conversion is close but still off.

By the time the rich buyers of this car tick off the option box, it'll climb into the mid-high $200Ks anyway. But having said that, I'm glad that MB is trying to make sure that people know this is a more expensive VERSION of the S-class and not be too greedy/crazy.

Clearly folks weren't willing to pay the exorbitant prices of the original Maybach so it makes sense that this Maybach starts at about half the price. Smart move.

It's the same name but different car. Maybach used challenge Rolls Royce and it's the epitome of luxury. While the S class is a nice car but this is essentially a stretched version with amenities taking advantage of the longer body.
I've seen the Maybach in person as well as the current S600 Maybach. The materials used are totally different. The price is just about right for this car.

But this time around the underpinnings, electronics and telematics are fresh.

On what planet did previous Maybach ever challenge RR? The previous Maybach was laughed at and shunned.

If that price is correct, (1) Mercedes learned a BIG lesson from the Maybach debacle, and (2) this will actually sell.

Mercedes - please consider selling a 4-Matic version (the S550 or S63) for us in the Northeast. Else the "richies" will be sliding around Manhattan in the snow next winter with their RWD S600 V12's. You'll sell a ton of them.

Mercedes-Benz already sells a 4Matic version of the S550 and the S63 AMG comes standard with 4Matic.

It appears Mercedes-Benz learned that there was no point in trying to compete with Rolls-Royce and Bentley because that was a battle it surely was not going to win. I think this price point is much more appropriate for the car given its looks and overall resemblance to the basic S-Class.

Although this will creep into Bentley Flying Spur territory when optioned, these two cars couldn't me more different. Whereas the Flying Spur is a car to drive the Maybach S-Class is a car to be driven in.

They should sell an S550 Maybach 4-matic or an S63 Maybach 4-matic or even an S600 4-Matic Maybach if it can be engineered - MB will miss out on Northeast sales if they don't.

It's just a new strategy Marketing to recognize the name MAYBACH! In the future for sure there will be an even more luxurious model MAYBACH that has nothing to do with the S-class, just like AMG has done with the GT.
