Study Shows Your New EV May Actually Be Dirtier Than The Gas Powered Car It Replaced
People who own all-electric cars where coal generates the power may think they are helping the environment. But a new study finds their vehicles actually make the air dirtier, worsening global warming.

Ethanol isn't so green, either.

"It's kind of hard to beat gasoline" for public and environmental health, said study co-author Julian Marshall, an engineering professor at the University of Minnesota. "A lot of the technologies that we think of as being clean ... are not better than gasoline."

If you live in the US, chances are 70% that your "clean electricity" comes from burning fossil fuel or garbage. Factor in the heavily polluting manufacturing process for batteries, and you get more dirt. So much for "clean" EVs. But as long as the consumer feels good about their purchase...

70% eh? did you pull that out of your ass? Let's have a look at the real numbers. The study above says that EV's are worse on coal....but better on everything else. You be the judge:

Sources of Electricity in the US:
Coal 39%
Natural Gas 27%
Nuclear 19%
Hydropower 7%
Other Renewable 6%
Biomass 1.48%
Geothermal 0.41%
Solar 0.23%
Wind 4.13%
Petroleum 1%

800over: You might want to set your venom aside for a moment. Although I cannot vouch for the veracity of your numbers, they ALSO say around 70% comes from fossil fuel and garbage (from your numbers: Coal 39% + Natural Gas 27% + Biomass 1.48 = 67.48%).

Hugs and love to you.

Ooops, forgot the Petroleum, which brings YOUR numbers up to 68.48% fossil fuel and garbage. Are we that far apart?

While I'm no environmentalist, this is bunk. They are focusing on a subset of the entire electric grid. I believe the current makeup of the US grid is under 40% coal, and decreasing all the time. Here in the Northwest, our power is over 90% hydro. As the coal plants are replaced, the entire grid gets cleaner.

Yes, there is substantial power generated via Natural Gas, and also burning other things like garbage. Guess what: the emissions from these plants is much easier to clean up than a million tailpipes.

As clean as my diesel is (and yes, it is very clean), I still look forward to the day there's an EV that works for me. The Tesla is close, but a little to expensive for me.

EVs just shift the pollution source and their batteries are TOXIC as all heck.

old news, but glad to see someone is talking about it

here in Connecticut, coal is less than 1% of the grid. Our gas is the most expensive in the US. Tesla and other EVs make perfect sense for Connecticut.

I think Hawaii beats you for highest gas prices, and Alaska is probably second. It's pretty high here in Seattle still. Just barely under $3 gallon at most stations, and diesel is still $3.50+.

What's hilarious is the whole reason we use gas is because it is cheap....too cheap for us the care about the environmental costs. Now that EV's are actually starting to approach a reasonable cost: THE ENVIRONMENT!!!! hypocrites.
