Production NSX Set To For Detroit Debut - Is This Going To Be A True Supercar Or Just A Technology Exercise?

American Honda Motor Co. will show the production version of the Acura NSX supercar for the first time globally next month at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

"The next generation NSX is going to deliver extreme supercar performance for the street and for the track," John Mendel, executive vice president of the automobile division for American Honda, told reporters in Detroit Tuesday. "And an all new engine made into a three-motor sport hybrid system truly delivers a new sports car experience."

I don't really understand the 12+ month delay. I saw the concept in the flesh the same time I first saw the C7 Corvette. The C7 is now on its 2nd year of production and currently delivering the "high performance" variant.

The NSX should have been on the streets for over a year now. It's been in development for so damn long -- 8 years, man! I'm not even sure how high expectations are right now; people have soured on the idea of the car because of the long wait and nothing really different from when we first saw it. Well, hopefully it won't catch fire now.

The way Acura is hyping this thing ("extreme supercar performance"), it probably needs to hang with the NISMO GT-R, the Z06, the 458 Speciale, the 650S, etc. The latest and beastliest of its modern rivals. If it underperforms in comparison, then its price will not be as attractive and people with the cash to spend might overlook it.

Acura needs a halo car like the NSX to succeed way more than Lexus needed anything out of the LFA program, so hopefully they've gotten the performance benchmarks where they need them. I for one think the car looks pretty cool. Wish the beak were gone altogether and the car heralded a new design direction for the brand rather than just looking as good as the current theme can probably get.

Not really sure what "delay" you're talking about. When the NSX concept was introduced in 2012, it was known at that time that the production car wouldn't be introduced for 3 years, hence, the 2015 introduction date. Alot of folks selectively didn't read/understand that part of the concept's introduction and kept bellyaching about a "delay".

As far this car's performance, we'll have to see. Acura has proven that it can build cars that can hang with almost anyone in the past (even their FWD models), so we can only hope that this car gets them back on that track, in addition to the technology they bring to the table. I just hope none of the production cars catch on fire :-P

I didn't mean it was intended for 2013/14 and then got officially delayed. Sorry about being unclear. I mean it looked like it initially showed up at the right time, but the window of excitement for it kind of came and went. Maybe setting up assembly for it here in OH was part of the reason for the gap from concept to production.

You're basically buying a brand new car that is 3 years old is the point.

Some of these angles look a bit too similar to the TLX for my liking

The thought of this car being competitive to the current crop of supercars is just a fan boy wet dream.

Acura lost the edge decades ago, and has shown no signs of being close to being competitive in any segment.

They will try to make up the shortcomings in performance by showcasing technology which get some early adopters. But it will not be a threat to anyone.

I agree. To even think that a garbage like this one from Japan outbesting the rivals from the ultra mighty Europe sounds pretty outrageous already. When there are Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Pagani, McLaren and Bugatti, what can this little Honda Civic Coupe really do?

Only little boy racers and fanboys would think this car would be any good. The real car enthusiasts with taste and classiness would only go for European, not some junk like this one.

Like the last one, this will be pointless. This is a flagship/halo car for a brand that sells Japanese Mercurys. Audi, BMW, and Mercedes have products that build up to the flagship/halo car.

At the end of the day, I can get something as good or better with a Porsche, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, or Jaguar emblem rather than paying premium money for a car that comes from a near-premium brand.

An NSX aimed at the 370Z, Mustang GT, GT350, Cayman, Stingray price span would have done much more for making Acura relevant.

As with the Phaeton, you can make a premium vehicle, but marketing it under a non-premium brand is just stupid.

i dont know why you guys are hating on this car so much.. im just as impatient as the rest of you and feel it definitely should have been out by now.
the car definitely has its hands full and in my opinion needs to be on par performance wise with the gt-r or it really will be disappointing.
with the z06 being 90k loaded, this car is already in trouble...

We're "hatin' on it yo'" because the NSX has NO EARNED CREDIBILITY. Acura needs to EARN it's credibility with a GT86 competitor, and a 370Z/Corvette competitor first. This will turn out to be a doddering mess like the last one was.

This thing will be EASILY eclipsed by cars costing MUCH less.

This car will be amazing out of the chute, it will get great review and will be high lauded. Two years down the road, it will start falling behind the competition and in four it will still be loved but will be woefully out performed.

Honda makes great sports cars but they are horrible sports car company. There is little to now continuing development of their sports car. It as is if they throw the cars out there and say "this is the very best of Honda" then forget about the cars, just look at the S2000 and previous NSX. I'll be waiting for it to happen again on the 2027 NSX too.

The tech is quite promising here. It has a brand new DOHC V6 (not the same ol used in every other Acura for the past decade) with turbos and the hybrid set up front. I am thinking about a 115-120 1/4 trap speed. Should be a little quicker than the Corvette and 911 Carrera S.

How the hell can some of you pass judgement on a car that hasn't been released yet? Sure, the luxury European brands make premium machines - but I expect no less since they charge premium prices. Far more challenging to produce premium products without the premium price. Sheesh - some of the blatant ignorant comments sound like they're coming from snobby pinheads with little wonkers.
