DETROIT AUTO SHOW: What Will The Acura NSX NEED To SUCCEED? Will It NEED To Be As Groundbreaking As The ORIGINAL NSX?
It's taken just about forever and this is what many have been waiting for. The Acura NSX was a legend when it first came about in the 1990s, less so when it was out of production in the 2000s.

The question now must not be IF Acura can do it again — we know that the company can. The question must be — in the age of super competitive sports cars — WHAT must Acura do to beat out the other guys?

THINK: the Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Porsche 911, Jaguar F-Type, Mercedes-AMG GT all exist.

Taking that into consideration, what do YOU think the company needs to bring to the 2015 Detroit Auto Show to whiz past the competition?

Acura NSX Production Model to Make World Debut at 2015 North American International Auto Show

TORRANCE, Calif., December 17, 2014 – The production version of the highly anticipated Acura NSX supercar, successor to the legendary original NSX, will make its world debut at the 2015 North American International Auto Show on January 12, 2015. The model will reflect the production design and specifications of the mid-engine Acura supercar that is slated to launch in 2015. To celebrate the impending debut of NSX, Acura released a 30-second teaser video that gives an early glimpse of the production car and the sound of its three-motor, twin-turbocharged Sport Hybrid power unit. View the video at YouTube.com/Acura.

"The next-generation NSX will deliver a 'new sports experience' true to its heritage and to the supercar concept that originally gave rise to the name NSX," said Mike Accavitti, Acura division senior vice president and general manager. "The NSX will serve as the ultimate expression of Acura performance that is fueling a reenergized brand."

An Acura NSX concept model made its debut at the 2012 North American International Auto Show, where Honda Motor Co., Ltd. President & CEO Takanobu Ito announced that development of a next-generation NSX would launch in three years, led by an American R&D team and produced at a state-of-the-art new plant in Ohio.

"After three years of intensive development work we are excited to reveal this next-generation supercar-the Acura NSX-to the world," said Ted Klaus, chief engineer and global project leader over NSX development. "We've developed a human-centered supercar that responds to the will of the driver and that builds upon the NSX heritage."

The next milestone in the launch of the NSX will be the reveal of the production version at the Acura press conference at the North American International Auto Show on January 12 at 11:50 a.m. ET. Watch the press conference live at youtube.com/Acura.

The NSX is being developed by a global team of engineers led by the company's North American R&D operations in Raymond, Ohio, with design led by the Acura Design Studio in Torrance, CA. The Acura NSX will be produced exclusively at the new Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio, using domestic and globally sourced parts.

The thing is, this car is entirely made by the Honda U.S.A., not Honda Japan, which is pretty funny. I mean, can you imagine BMW making their flagship, or Mercedes-Benz or Ferrari making their flagship model outside of Germany or Italy? Obviously by then, people would lose confidence in their engineering and such. But we all know this won't even happen, as Ferrari will always remain to be built in Italy (Even though their management HQ could be moved to other country) and Porsche, BMW and such will always be German.

So, I have a feeling that this car will basically fall apart like a typical American car, like Dodge Viper does.

If Japan is no longer proud of their Made in Japan branding, then "no one" should be proud of owning this piece of junk.

You see Ferrari, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Porsche and such ultra mighty European brands proudly waving their own flags of Great Britain, Italy and Germany, and here we are, we have Honda, which is trying to make a Honda Viper.

But most likely Dodge Viper is a lot more fun to drive than this junk.

To me, it comes down to numbers. The new NSX appears to be an R8/911/AMG GT competitor. If so how does it stack up, HP/Torque, performance, skidpad, features, price? If it is not competitive, it won't make it. The first NSX stood apart due to great looks, a lower entry price and superior dependability. Long-term dependability is less of an issue than it was 20 years ago. Price is important, but if the price is too low, that will also be a detractor. I hope it's successful for them, but hopes are relatively low.

Pretty true but a lot of sales for "super cars" depend on how cool it ends up looking. The way Acura is probably going to price it you get the hybrid part for "free" compared to its competition. But then again Acura needs that hybrid part to make up for a lack of a V8 and to have comparable performance.

I remember when the NSX first came out and there were a lot of skepticism. But it won accolades because it delivered exotic car performance (ie Ferrari and Porsche) while differentiating itself by way of i) daily use practicality ii) Honda dependability iii) collateral asset of Ayrton Senna's success with F1 Hondas. It's almost 20 years now and the Ferrari, Porsche, MB's AMG, etc. all have the same ease of operations/practicality, dependability (maybe?), and image. I think it will be difficult for this NSX to really stand out and be a big hit in this segment.

If it's a "performance hybrid" sports car, it's only real competition in this price range is the i8. If it's a better value, then it will sell. If not, then the i8 will eat it for lunch.
