Audi Sets A New Benchmark with the V12 Diesel Q7
German Magazine Auto Motor Sport reports today that the Paris Auto show will be the backdrop for the unveiling of the Audi V12 diesel Q7. This engine is based directly off of the Lemans winning V12 currently undefeated in American Lemans Series Racing in the US. The magazine also reports this 6.0 liter V12 will have around 500 HP, pegging it at the top of the food chain for its class. With that horsepower expect the 0-60 to be under 5.5 seconds. Could this be a new power plant for the S6 or S8 in the future?

"disasterous" How exactly is 20mpg for a 500+ bhp V12 considered disasterous? Have you taken a look at the gas milage some of the other engines of that size or power get?

And additionally, as mentioned before, if you're dropping the money to get this monster, gas milage is probably one of your last concerns.

Zedani,

It's fast enough for an SUV. I really don't get turned on by performance numbers in an SUV. My first consideration when shopping for an SUV is FUEL ECONOMY. The V12 TDI will get better fuel economy than a gas V12 or even a gas V8, but the fuel economy will still be poor compared to the Q7 3.0 TDI. If I had the choice, I'd take the Q7 3.0 TDI over this.

Yes the technology is really amazing. Some aspects (2,000 bar injection) come directly from the Le Mans winning R10. Expect the technology from the V12 TDI to trickle down to the next generation of TDIs that come out next year (4 cylinders)

Eat your heart out Porsche Cayenne S...

...A few amazing Q7 V12 facts.

-It produces 1000NM of torque at -wait for it- 1700rpm!

-It does 24mpg

-It complies with ultra-strict euro5 emissions laws, not set for effect until 2010

-5.5 seconds to 100km/h

An incredible achievement.

I think it's closer to 20 mpg, which is still extremely good considering the power output. It's a 6.0L V12 after all, not a Honda Civic 4-banger getting 40 mpg or whatever.

To compare apples to oranges, the M5 has a 5.0L V10 producing 500 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. It gets 12 mpg city and 18 mpg highway. That's not that great, but what you would expect from a high-performance engine.

THIS Q7 PRODUCES THE SAME HP AND 350 MORE TORQUE THAN THE M5!!!

If gas mileage is not a concern then, diesel V12 is probably my last concern.
U can get the same BHP from a twin turbo V8.
