SPIED: The START Of A NEW BMW Z Car? What Do YOU Make Of THIS WEIRD 2-Series Prototype?
Recently spied doing some developmental testing was a blood red BMW 2-Series. At first glance it may  just appear to be an M235i, but it's not that at all.

Take a closer look.

The first thing that should jump out at you is that this vehicle has a chopped top. As far as we know BMW isn't in the hot rod business yet, so it's weird to say the least. In addition the hood is lightweight and blacked out, which we're assuming means it's different over the stock M235i — perhaps carbon fiber? Another thing I've noticed is that the vehicle's stance is most definitely not the same as a 2-Series. It's much lower front and rear. Around the back is a much larger truck-mounted lip spoiler.

All of this has us asking "What is it?"

As of now early speculation has the consensus focusing on the beginnings of a Z car, dubbed the Z2. I am not sure whether that's a stretch or not, but it looks like this chop top look is pretty final and not just a way to simulate a lower center of gravity. Could this actually be the much-anticipated M2 sporting a carbon fiber hood and roof?

What say you, Spies?

I would think it's either the M2 or some CSL variant.

The more thinking I do about it, the more I am thinking M2. The top looks too final and not like something mocked up for a prototype, in my personal opinion.

I believe the M235i comes sans fogs.

So,ehow the M2 argument does not make sense. BMW is not going to have a chopped top version of the M2. On thenotherhand if it was the new Z2 roadster under all that maybe it makes sense as the hardtop variant? Does seem an odd test car though.

You bring up a great possibility: Z2 coupe. The last clown shoe M coupe was greatly missed, despite its ugliness. On the other hand, if this is even close to what the next M Coupe could look like, SIGN ME UP!

That has to be a CSL variant. Given the "lightweight" look of those components, thats what a CSL has always been about.

Looks better than the current one but I'd rather go with the larger 4 coupe.
