Audi R8 to debut with RS4's 420 horsepower V8. V10 w/ 500 hp to follow soon after.

As we all know there will be 2 variants of the Audi R8 supercar. The initial version will come with a 420 hp V8 courtesy of the RS4. The later version will come with a V10 with over 500 horsepower.

The RS4 weighs approximately 3,800 pounds, comes with 4 doors and seats 5, but can do 0-60 in the 4.5 second territory and has been clocked as fast as 4.3 seconds. It can also lap the Ring in the same time as a BMW M5.

The R8 will be a 2 door, 2 seater, all-out sports car weighing in at around 3,200 pounds. The R8 will have the same engine as the RS4. Estimates say the 0-60 for the V8 shoud be in the high 3 to low 4-second range. With brakes to match, the R8 will surely be a car that will likely lap the Ring in under 8 minutes.

The V10 version will come with around 500 horsepower and should be able to do the dash to 60 in the mid-high 3-second range and will be guaranteed to clear the ring in under 8 minutes.

What this means to you: An affordable supercar from Audi that will be able to hang with the super-exotics

The V8 will be in the $90-100K range. The V10 will be in the $115K -125K range.

The V10 will absolutely fly. 500 horsepower & a V10 in a car that can already do the 0-60 sprint in close to 4 seconds with a 420 horsepower V8.

The V10 will offer some incredible performance and track times.

In strictly performance the V10 R8 will be able to compete very competitively with the Corvette Z06, Lamborghini Gallardo, Porsche 911 Turbo and Ferrari F430 along with the Ford GT.

0-60 times should be in the 3.5-3.8 range and quarter mile times in the 11.6-11.9 range

The R8 V10 will compare favorably against the likes of the BMW M6, Porsche 911 Turbo, Aston Martin DB9, Mercedes SL55/SL65 (much heavier), etc.

It will also easily be the best-handling Audi ever, with the latest generation of quattro AWD, and, according to "logical"'s logic, it will be a re-badged Lamborghini.

Sweet.

S4cabriofox, actually the R8 will be a much better performer than the M6 (it's too heavy), Aston Martin DB9 (really isn't THAT fast) and Mercedes SL55 (which is underpowered and too heavy) and the SL65 which just has too much horsepower and weight to be able to do anything else except go in a straight line.

The only true track and straight-line competitor will be the Porsche 911 Turbo.

A rebadged Lamborghini? Where do I sign up......

The R8 will get the RS4 engine but with some nice upgrades. The horsepower will be more than 5 more than the RS4. I think that it could have about 435 hp. Also, it will get a dry sump lubrication sytsem. You will also be able to see the engine like on the Ferrari F430. The R8 should also be very light. It will also be shown a couple of days before the official September 28 Paris debut.

The R8 will be a budget supercar. It won't compete with the cars stated above in handling and performance. It will however, compete with Enzo FXX, Veyron 16, and SLR 722. It runs circles around a 911 GT2 and LP620 during testing.

MB3494-

"Risk" performance? Porsche 911 Turbo and Lambo Gallardo both have AWD, as well as the critically-acclaimed and successful Continental GT, if you haven't noticed. Quattro is the thing that keeps Audi thriving- it makes their cars a completely different sensory experience than the simple RWD cars, and gives you more control on the road.

When Larry says he likes an Audi, you know it'll be good.

Now... why isn't logical bashing it?

Are you sure about that? The FXX and Veyron are ultra-high-super-supercars with unreachable price tags and performance, and the Bugatti is about 15X the price of this R8 V8. The R8 V10's closest competitor will be the 911 Turbo, and, I know Lamborghini doesn't want to hear this, but the Gallardo.

The Gallardo just got bumped up to a reported 600 horsepower.

The FXX and Bugatti Veyron are not competitors to the R8.

The FXX costs somewhere around $1 million. The Veyron is also over $1 million

Logical, has praised the R8 as well.

If Larry and Logical both praise an Audi, you know it will be a damn great car.

logical consider this

The RS4 that Audi states 0-60 in 4.8 seconds actually does it in 4.3 seconds. Audi will probably say that the R8 does it in 4.5 seconds, but it will do it in 4 seconds flat.

logical,

Does it hurt you that 'The Ultimate Driving Machine' doesn't actually have an ultimate driving machine in their line-up?

The are great to drive, sure, but with technology-overload controlling everything, it doesn't really involve the driver like it should.

I guess you are to stuck up to buy a Lotus Elise, which is ten times the driving tool of any BMW model.

And please, don't go ignoring my comments, because unlike you, I actually have an open-minded approach to cars, meaning I have more right to judge a car than you, because I'm not stuck in a little world of my own.

logical besides being all full of crap about your cars why do you deny these numbers. The R8 w/ V8 will go 0-0 in 4.0-4.2 seconds. The R8 w/ V10 will go 0-60 in 3.6-3.9 with a 1/4 mile in the 11.6-11.9 range.

I'll tell you what, BMW doesn't have anything close to the mid 3 second range.

Sucks, doesn't it?

I don't think a V10 R8 will be faster than a Gallardo. As Gallardo will be improved to 600BHP,i still doubt of the refreshed gallardo getting under 3.5 seconds.

According to new CAR Magazine, The new R8 with V8,will be getting a price tag of $100K and doing 0-60 in less than or equal to 4.5 seconds.
The other with V10 will have a price tag of $150K and will do 0-60 less than or equal to 4.0 seconds.

Exactly my point logical. Look at what Jugnu wrote just above this post.

Well Jugnu if you think about it this way for a minute, how can an R8 which weighs 3,200 pounds, is a 2 door, 2 seat roadster have the equivalent 0-60 time of an RS4 sedan which is 600 pounds heavier at 3,800 pounds, has 4 doors and seats 5, when they both have the SAME exact engine (a V8 with 420 horsepower)??

That clearly doesn't add up.

My BS as a direct consequence logical?? How about you take a look at the specs of the R8 in terms of weight, engine, body structure and compare it to the RS4.

If you could actually do proper mathematical calculations you would find that the cars have the exact same engines, the R8 weighs 600 pounds less than the RS4, has 2 doors instead of the RS4's 4 and seats 2 instead of 5 for th RS4.

If the RS4 can go 0-60 in an estimate 4.5 seconds, the R8 (V8) would have to be faster.

Even if the R8 w/ nearly 500 horsepower were to do 0-60 in 4.0 seconds which is probably conservative it would still be 1 tenth of a second faster than the BMW M5 or M6 which have 4.1 for their fastest 0-60 times. In the quarter mile the R8 V10 will easily get under 12 seconds considering the RS4 with 80 less horsepower, 2 fewer cylinders and 2 more doors can do the 1/4 in 12.3.

Logical, we know Audi's intentions for this car. They are clearly apparent. Audi has designed the R8 to be their supercar.

With this approach in mind, Audi most certainy will not make the RS4 which costs about half the price of the R8 FASTER than their supercar.

Face it Audi has won in this battle.

The R8 will be faster than the two fastest production BMWs - the M5 & M6 GUARANTEED in V10 form and quite possibly in V8 form as well.

The specs for the V10 R8 are clearly giving the Audi, the upper hand in this test.

My 14 year old temper getting to me???

More like your inner rage is fueling you to type such lousy comments as you are being constantly put down by a BMW owner, half your age with a lineup of BMWs that is actually current.

I have a tip for you Logical: Do the comparisons of the RS4 and the R8 with V10. Let me know if you think the V10 will be faster.

Or because you can't do the math, I'll do it for you.

Unlike you, I'm open to many cars. But some people, like yourself, I'm not open to- stereotypical BMW owner who thinks he's better than everyone else. You are singularly the only person on this website who gives BMW a bad name.

When you get to be eighteen years old, look back at all of your posts on this website. You will realize that you need to learn. We will teach you.

If you are so "disgusted with Audi", why do you post on every dam* Audi article on this site? Let the rest of the people fawn over the R8, don't ruin it like you always do. We know you hate Audi, we don't have to hear it repeatedly.

And by the way, have you ever owned an Audi? Apparently not, because if you have owned an Audi that is '00 or newer, you would not be saying what you say. It would probably be the exact opposite, in fact.

Once he learns the true meaning of what it is to be a car enthusiast, then, MAYBE we will talk to him again. But until then, at least I alone will not respond to his posts, because it seems as if he will never learn.

Is there anybody here brave enough to join me? It's hard to resist his horrid postings, but I think I'm man enough.

We should get some performance numbers when the R8 is unveiled in 16 days.

Of course the R8 is going to be faster. The M5 weighs 4000 lbs and the M6 3900 lbs. The R8 V10 will have the same power output as the M5/M6 V10. So with the R8 being about 700 lbs lighter, it is physically impossible for the R8 to be anything but WAY faster than the M5/M6. The only question is if the R8 V8 will be faster than the M5/M6. Probably yes, but we'll see.

That being said, it's not fair to compare with the M5 or M6. Not that those aren't fast cars, but the R8 is a supercar whose competition is other supercars. The M5 and M6 are based on platforms that are just too big and heavy to be in the same league.

anS4inOC-

Actually, I'm pretty sure that the R8 will have about 550hp from its V10, which means it will be even faster, proprtionately, than the M6.

The R8 V10 will probably be close, as it will be about 100lbs lighter than the V10, and the RS4 already has more than ample acceleration.
