Over Half Of Recalled Vehicles Are Not Fixed Because It Isn't A Priority
Each day, attorney Terry Harris sets out in his trusty 2002 Honda Civic, which has 150,000 miles — and has been recalled for a variety of defects considered dangerous by safety regulators.

Two are for air bags that can explode, sending shrapnel into the cabin. Another aims to fix a wiring problem that could make the headlights shut off suddenly.

"I think probability works in my favor. I don't feel that it is urgent," Harris said. "If I ever take the car into the dealership, I will get it fixed. But it is not at the top of my things-to-do list."

Automakers recalled about 60 million vehicles in the U.S. this year, almost double the previous record set a decade ago.

But as many as 35 million of these vehicles have not been repaired, according to some estimates — even though many have defects that have been linked to multiple fatalities.

The man, a lawyer, makes an interesting point. The probability of something happening to him because of these defects is likely much lower than being injured or killed by a texting, dui or speeding driver. How much should a society spend to reduce his risk? It does point out that once notification is certified to have occurred and the vehicle owner neglects to act and something happens then any right to sue should be forfeited.

I say make it this simple. Recalls are tied to VIN numbers. If an owner has been contacted but has not come in for repairs, absolve the car company. Then if the owner is hurt for not having done the recall, the car company is not liable. Should the owner want to sell the car and there are outstanding unrepaired recalls, the car may not be sold or traded.

The socialists want to bang and blame big business and do class action lawsuits to extract money from deep pockets, but the owners--in the world of the socialists--have no responsibility because they are victims.

Owners have responsibility and need to stop playing the victim.
