Will BMW Ever Break Down And Admit They Were Wrong And Build An AWD M Car?

Many changes have become of BMW and their sub-divisions (M and i Division) as of late. In the past few years we’ve seen the first M SUVs, the first turbocharged M cars, an M4, an electric hatchback and a hybrid, two-seater sports car.

So what’s next for BMW?

Mercedes has all but done so with AMG.

AWD giveth as much as it taketh away. Given that an M3 usually out-handles its S4 contemporary, it follows that Audi's quattro is not the Holy Grail of performance excellence but a bandaid grafted in to overcompensate for the FWD architecture.

Drive a BMW back to back with a quattro and the one thing that is obviously missing in the Audi is steering feel. Yes Audis are competent as heck, but NUMB.

Benz does a better job of keeping the numbness at bay, but I'd rather have an unruly RWD--not saying that of the BMW--than a nanny state AWD.

The RWD 911 is more fun than the AWD.

For me, I prefer RWD.

BMW should offer an AWD option, but not abandon RWD in its M level vehicles.

It has been reported in European press that M2 will be introduced as RWD to be followed a year later with AWD.

I predict the 2 Series will be another SLOW seller here no matter what they do.

If they price it right and it has the attributes that a lot of BMW fans are looking for it should do great.

Priced right would equal $35K loaded to the gills otherwise the 1 or 3 Series makes more sense. The 2 series should have been a fastback aimed at the price slice inhabited by the Mustang/Camaro/Challenger/Genesis Coupe/GT86 (high end)/370Z.

I guaranty the next generation M5 will have at least an AWD drive option.

I also believe that the next gen M will probably be hybrids too.

Contrary to other views I believe M2 will be BMW's most successful M model...it's a return to the company's heritage. Small in size, powerful, great handler at a more accessible price point. The M235i has gets great reviews and the M2 will surpass it in all regards. In addition all the BMW enthusiasts who got shut out of buying a One M model because of limited supply are chomping on the bit to get an M2 sized performance car. Time will tell.

I think M should always be RWD. The steering feel and fun you can have in a RWD car cannot be duplicated on an AWD platform especially those with an engine slung in front of the front axle. On the other hand BMW is probably ceding a lot of sales in snowy states to Audi/Mercedes. So they need a specialty offshoot of M for AWD cars. I think the natural name is MX and they need the tricolor to change shades maybe a white for snow, brown for dirt and black for Tarmac :). Also the M2 will be a good seller if it builds on the M235.
