UAW Says Current Wages Do Not Provide A Livable Wage - At $20+HR What Lifestyle Are they Seeking For Blue Collar Work?

The North American automotive industry has been rolling along at a brisk pace, with sales in the U.S. rebounding to pre-recession levels. Many expect 2015 to be more of the same, but there are potential obstacles that could put the brakes on the industry’s momentum.

Among the unknowns: The future of the 2-tier wage system at UAW-organized plants.

“No more concessions. We are tired of it. Enough is enough,” New UAW President Dennis Williams said during his inauguration speech. “We are all committed to eliminating the 2-tier system.”

Williams claims the lower level of the 2-tier compensation structure, where newly hired employees earn roughly $20 an hour compared with $27 for veteran workers, does not provide a livable wage. He characterizes it as a starting point arrived at by bargainers from the UAW and Chrysler, Ford and General Motors during a time of crisis.

Ya gotta love Autospies. A picture of the Lexus assembly line in Japan as part of an article about the UAW and US automakers!

Hmmm... you got a point there. Subbed in Ford assembly plant image to better represent the story.

Why would the UAW care? They know we will bail them out.

Terry what did Bush do to the UAW? What a knee-jerk comment. Its a global economy and it companies can make them cheaper, and better elsewhere, they're going to do it. The UAW is a dinosaur and a cancer.... they serve no one but themselves and the DemoCraps they supply money to in exchange for influence. That is a pure fact....

@W124E320 we must forgive people like @Terry989 who voted for Obama to make an historical moment and then again in 2012 because he could admit he made a mistake in 2008.

What does Obama have to do with the UAW that Bush didn't? Just other bunch of Palin humpin Repubic hairs in denial of the worst presidency in our history while blaming their own shortcomings on government. If the UAW in broken now, it was broken then, why didn't Bush fix it? Oh yea, he was too busy devastating the economy.

Matt lost his Porsche business and now blames Obama for it. The government can't fix stupid or make up for those with no business acumen.

@Terry989 I did not lose Porsche. I sold my part ownership in a VW/Porsche/Audi store while the profit from Porsche was still strong...and strong enough for a poor sucker to gamble on the notion that the nonexistent profits at VW would change and that the soft profits on Audi will suddenly become strong.

Please quote exactly where I blamed Obama for me deciding to sell dealership interest before I incurred a loss.

Can't find it, you say? That's because it doesn't exist.

You couldn't prevail on fact and logic so you went histrionic, emotional, and shrill.

Once you told me you owned a Porsche dealer which is why you are an expect an Porsche. Now you tell us you sold your shares (or was it we sold our shares - - - from one of your previous stories - - - it is getting more difficult to keep your changing stories straight).

I have owned "shares" in multiple energy based MLPs as well stocks in drilling services, extraction, pipelines, rig service and fleet suppport for over 10 years now. According to your definition, I am an expert in the oil field. I can now call everyone else an idiot, tell them I can do there jobs better than they can and call customers stupid for buying there product.

So once again, what does Obama have to do with UAW wanting higher wages. Provide me a quote where it stated this. Nothing, I thought not.

I think the only honest thing you have ever told is when you called yourself white trash.

Terry the only comment to you is you're a $5#@ing idiot. Yea, Bush added $8T in debt in 6 years, right that's good for our grandkids future... moron! The Real Estate issue was all done by Clinton. Keep your moronic head in the sand and keep drinking the kook aid. Moron... and you think your smarter than everyone else.... Bush ran Texas for 8 years, he had Executive Experience, he can fly a fighter jet..... The man-child currently occupying the WH never ran any a thing, he never had a real job. Idiots put him where he is and idiots re-elected him. Bush graduated from Yale and Harvard, this moron graduated from where? No one has seen his grades? If he is soooooo smart why not? History will prove this one worse than the other worst, Jimmy Carter, and then that reprobate Clinton. Suppose you're on the "Hitlary" bandwagon. Another zero accomplishment, arrogant liberal ideologue. She's never done ONE thing for this nation. Name ONE?

W124E320 - - - what a dick. Matt called himself white trash and has turned out to be the biggest racist and bigot on this site. White trash is not my term, it is his. Review his past posts verse mine. Then think for yourself - - - if that is at all possible. I will respond to a political comment, but I will never initiate one because it does not belong on this site. Unlike you two who are off cuddling in the corner together.

40k a year is not really livable for a family. If you say it is, I'd love to see you try it. It was barely enough 20 years ago. Forget about now.

The reality is that people have to reorient. Ban the UAW from all political action. Make membership in the UAW 100% voluntary. Let workers be fired for not giving 100% and I'm ok with doubling their salary. UAW workers need to realize that their union is an American cancer that needs to be eradicated for the health of the patient.

Unions emerged when there were no workplace laws to protect workers. We now have copious laws in place to protect workers, so the function of the unions in American has become to rape workers of union dues against their will and funnel the money to the Democrats.

Wake up workers! De-Unionize NOW!

Really? Greedy bastards, I don't know the exact wages blue collar workers make in places like Mexico and China but that is what we should be shooting for. Who do they think they are? Germans? Japanese? Do they think the US is a first world social democracy? Those countries don't even have auto jobs anymore due to the high wages they pay auto workers... heck those workers are so uppity they think they should be able to buy the products they are making....crazy!
