Lexus GS350 Ups The Ante on BMW with Over 300HP
For 2007, the new Lexus GS 350 enters the market as a more powerful version of 2006's newly introduced third-generation GS 300. It joins the GS 430 in Lexus' mid-luxury sedan offerings. The 2007 GS 350 builds upon its predecessor model's already significant levels of performance, advanced luxury and intuitive technology, and it becomes the most powerful six-cylinder model in its segment. The handling performance of the 2007 GS 430's potent 4.3-liter V8 is further optimized by a newly available active stabilizer system that automatically and seamlessly counteracts body sway to improve cornering performance. "The 2007 GS models epitomize the direction of the Lexus brand, offering more emotional design and remarkably higher performance without compromising the luxurious comfort, attention to detail and quality that continue to rank Lexus as the leader in the luxury category," said Bob Carter, Lexus group vice president and general manager. The 2007 GS 350 replaces the previous 245-horsepower 3.0-liter engine with a new 303-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, which delivers blistering performance with zero-to-60 mph in just 5.7 seconds, as well as exemplary fuel efficiency for the class. The GS 350 is available in rear- and all-wheel-drive models with respective preliminary EPA-estimated fuel mileage ratings of 21/29 and 20/27 city/highway; the V8 GS 430 continues as a rear-wheel drive model, carrying an EPA-estimated rating of 18/25 mpg. Aluminum alloy 18-inch wheels are standard on the GS 430 and newly available for the rear-wheel-drive GS 350. All GS models offer the new Generation 5 Lexus DVD Navigation System for 2007, which features Bluetooth® compatibility, voice activation and a rear back-up camera. In addition, the Lexus Link® telematics system is now available for 2007 GS models. 303-Horsepower V6 Is a Power Leader Optimized for low internal friction, the GS 350’s 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 303 horsepower at 6,400 RPM and 274 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,800 rpm. A new direct fuel-injection system provides much finer fuel-mixture control to improve both power and fuel efficiency. Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) acts on both intake and exhaust valves to further enhance performance through a wide rpm range. The GS 430’s 4.3-liter double overhead-cam V8 engine produces 290 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 319 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,400 rpm. Continuously Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) ensures excellent low- and mid-range power for easy highway merging. Both GS models achieve the EPA’s Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) certification. All 2007 GS models maximize performance with a six-speed automatic transmission that features a sequential manual-shift mode. All-Wheel Drive for All-Weather Performance The 2007 GS 350’s available all-wheel-drive system helps to enhance handling in diverse driving conditions. A planetary-gear center differential and a wet-type multi-disc clutch control front-to-rear power distribution. The system normally sends 70 percent of available power to the rear wheels to provide the traditional performance advantages of a rear-drive car, but will vary the torque-split ratio from 30:70 to 50:50 in response to driving conditions and driver input. The AWD system’s electronic-control strategy takes inputs such as steering and throttle angle from driver activity combined with vehicle signals from wheel speed and yaw rate sensors. Ultra-Advanced Dynamic Handling Control The Lexus GS combines the best-proven design chassis systems with new dynamic handling technology. The double-wishbone front suspension and multilink rear suspension systems feature with geometry optimized to virtually eliminate unwanted wheel-angle changes during suspension movement. The result is a natural, confident feel that’s also spirited. An Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system, standard on and exclusive to the GS 430, provides four settings, including "sport," for tighter, more precise control. AVS can automatically select appropriate suspension damping for driving conditions. New for 2007, the GS 430 offers the advanced Active Stabilizer system that reduces body sway and enhances vehicle control during cornering. This new system uses electric actuators, rather than slower hydraulic units commonly found in similar systems. An Electronic Control Unit (ECU) calculates the force needed to counter excess body sway, which is then applied to the stabilizer bars by the front and rear actuators. The Active Stabilizer system responds within 20 milliseconds, compared to 100 milliseconds for a competitor. The Lexus system consumes no power under normal operating conditions, whereas the competitor’s system consumes over 240 watts. The GS 430 provides the performance enhancements and advanced vehicle control of the Lexus Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system. VDIM integrates and manages a host of handling technologies more quickly than previous dynamic handling technologies could. Combining input from a variety of sensors, VDIM is designed to anticipate the onset of a vehicle skid or slide and then help correct the situation with a combination of braking, throttle, and steering control in a way that is essentially transparent to the driver. VDIM integration helps to provide precise management for the Electronically Controlled Brakes (ECB), Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS), Electric Power Steering (EPS), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), and engine torque (via the electronically controlled throttle). New for 2007, the GS also allows the driver to disengage the stability and traction control via the Trac Off switch. Electric Power Steering Electric Power Steering (EPS) in the GS 430 provides precise electric power assist using a DC motor built into the steering gear housing, rather than hydraulic assist. Eliminating the hydraulic steering pump reduces engine drag, and the simplified steering system is lighter and more compact, as well. Also in the GS 430, Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) can vary the steering from 2.7 turns lock-to-lock for low-speed maneuverability to a slower 3.2 turns lock-to-lock for highway-speed stability. VGRS also provides differential steering control, which helps correct for a delay in steering response, something that occurs in all vehicles, to help enhance driving feel in lane changes and other transitional maneuvers. Intelligent and Powerful Brakes Enhanced braking performance in both GS sedans begins with mechanical components that significantly increase brake friction and improve stopping power, while effectively eliminating brake fade. Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) help form a powerful safety front. EBD optimizes brake pressure at each wheel to help minimize body dive or sway during hard braking and cornering. Brake Assist is designed to determine if the driver is attempting emergency braking and, if the driver has not stepped firmly enough on the brake pedal to activate the ABS, it will apply maximum braking force until pedal pressure is released. The GS 430’s Electronically Controlled Brakes (ECB) is a brake-by-wire system. ECB translates brake pedal pressure into electric signals that, via computer control, help provide precise and optimized braking in virtually any traction condition. Electronic control provides quick brake response when needed, helping the GS 430’s VDIM system to anticipate and help correct skids before they occur. The ECB system is backed by conventional hydraulic brake control in the unlikely event of electronic failure. Lexus designers strive to keep controls simple and intuitive, avoiding needless complexity. A secure and distraction-free setting enables the driver to best appreciate the GS’ enhanced performance. The SmartAccess keyless entry and push-to-start ignition allow the driver to keep the access fob in a pocket or purse. Audio and climate-control systems are easy to understand and operate, and the GS locates controls that are used less frequently behind a dash panel on the left side of the steering wheel. The gauge cluster features machined aluminum facings for a classic look. Highlighting the sporty nature of the GS and emphasizing a closer driver-and-machine connection, the quick-response tachometer moves more directly in concert with changes in engine rpm. The unique instrument panel lighting system relies on variable-transparency glass to minimize reflections from the gauge faces and to help optimize visibility in all lighting conditions. A comprehensive interior lighting system provides just the right amount of light where the driver and passengers need it. All four windows offer one-touch up-and-down operation with jam protection. Both electrochromic auto-dimming side mirrors are power-retractable and feature automatic tilt-down when reverse gear is selected to aid in parking. A power trunk closer provides a finishing touch on this extremely well-equipped car. Advanced Safety Systems Both GS models implement a variety of advanced safety systems. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) includes variable-force front airbags for both driver and front passenger. Sensors determine the severity of an impact and in turn the airbag deployment force, helping to provide an appropriate level of occupant restraint. The GS features standard seat-mounted side airbags for the front seats, knee airbags for the driver and front passenger, and front and rear side-curtain airbags. The optional Pre-Collision System (PCS) in the Lexus GS models can help reduce collision damage. A millimeter-wave radar sensor helps detect obstacles in front of the car, while vehicle speed, steering angle and yaw-rate inputs help to determine whether a collision is unavoidable. In such a situation, PCS switches the Adaptive Variable Suspension to sport mode for optimal chassis response, preemptively retracts front seat belts, and preinitializes Brake Assist so that increased braking will be applied the instant the driver depresses the pedal. The active braking feature will automatically apply the brakes up to a deceleration rate of 0.3 G’s if the driver fails to react to system warnings. Technology for Safer and Easier Driving Both ’07 GS models provide multiple systems to help improve driver safety and improve the overall behind-the-wheel experience. The Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS), standard on the GS 430 and optional for the GS 350, helps illuminate a curve as the driver steers into it. A Tire Pressure Monitoring system can detect a critical loss in pressure in one or more tires and alert the driver. The available Intuitive Park Assist (IPA) system uses ultrasonic sensors to detect objects close to the car’s front and rear bumpers and alert the driver accordingly. This updated version of the system first used in the LX 470 SUV and the previous-generation Lexus LS flagship sedan offers additional function by adding a steering-input sensor to better judge changes in distance to objects. The rear back-up camera, available in conjunction with the optional navigation system, automatically projects an image of what its lens can detect behind the vehicle onto the navigation screen when the vehicle is in reverse gear. Indulgent Luxury, Passionate Design The next-generation GS performance sedans ushered in a new more passionate design direction for the brand. From an architectural standpoint, the new Lexus design language, dubbed L-finesse, is more sculptural and dynamic and eschews gimmickry for intriguing simplicity. A 112.2-inch wheelbase, long hood, pulled-back cabin and short rear deck create a confident, powerful stance for the GS while a sloped, vertical grille surrounded by four independent headlamps visually connects the newer models with the previous generation while at the same time lending a distinct look that signals the brand’s design progression. The boldly styled lower valance features integrated foglamps, and a low 0.27 coefficient of drag (Cd) helps to minimize wind noise. L-finesse extends to the interior as well with a passenger compartment designed to impart a unique spatial feeling that creates an intuitive and naturally comfortable environment. The end result is a cabin that is intimate without feeling confining. Ultra-premium wood, polished-metal accents and leather trim endow the GS interior with a lavish yet high-precision feel, with touchpoints that convey quality and controls that respond fluidly. The GS customer can choose from among three interior leather color combinations: Ash with Black Bird’s-eye maple wood trim; Cashmere with Brown Bird’s-eye maple wood trim, or Black with walnut wood trim. Each combination includes a matching wood and leather-trim steering wheel and shift knob. The next-generation GS sedans continue the Lexus tradition of providing luxury that envelopes the occupants without introducing unnecessary distractions. The standard Regency leather-trimmed, heated, 10-way power front seats (perforated leather on GS 430) are supportive and comfortably contoured for long-trip support. Fan ventilation for the seats is optional. A power-tilt and telescopic steering wheel helps ensure a comfortable driving position. The standard dual-zone climate-control system filters and deodorizes the air, and a standard rear power sunshade adds to passenger comfort on warm days. Premium Audio Choices Lexus long ago established an elevated standard for mobile audio systems, and the next-generation GS models uphold this tenet with a standard system that features an AM/FM/cassette stereo and a 6-disc in-dash CD changer. The system plays through 10 premium speakers while an Automatic Sound Levelizer (ASL) maintains consistent sound levels at varying vehicle speeds. Within the ultra-quite Lexus GS interior, all styles of music come to life with the 7.1-channel optional Mark Levinson® audio system. Featuring 11 channels of amplification with a total of 330 watts playing through 14 speakers, the system allows users to play both CDs and DVDs. DVD movies can be viewed on the color seven-inch touch screen when the vehicle is in park. Fifth-Generation Navigation System All 2007 GS models offer the optional generation five Lexus DVD Navigation System. This revamped system includes voice-recognition that allows the driver to enter a destination by voice command. Visual support is greatly enhanced with a central screen featuring a high-resolution 800 x 480 pixel display in 32,000 colors. On-screen details are crisp and clean, and maps and roads include 3-D shadow effects. Spanish is added to the already available English and French text display options with the user able to select the language preference at system start-up. The DVD map database contains more than five million Points of Interest (POI). The database for Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, and New York includes a building footprint-display feature that can show graphic representations of buildings and structures to help the driver identify surroundings. System functions include multiple route calculations, route preview, simplified highway junction graphics, and a dual-map screen mode. Bluetooth® wireless technology integrates with the navigation system to allow the transfer of personal phone books to the navigation system. The driver can also make hands-free phone calls via its touch-screen control panel.

look at the picture of the red car, do you understand why i hate it? fat arse and beaky nose. it looks like toyota took far too many cues from the original previa.

This horsepower bump is 25% and if you hate Lexus you won't find anything to change your mind. But for people who aren't irrational about Lexus, it's a good solid option. Especially in Black Onyx. For $45k you could do a lot worse. And many of you probably have!

Clean? Not "overdone"? I hope you're joking. This car is so overstyled, it makes the 5 Series look boring. And not in a good way.

The E-Class and A6 are obviously the design leaders in this class, and the 5 Series is an acquired taste.

Supra, you're so full of yourself really. I have nothing against Lexus, but the way you Lexus fans act is pathetic sometimes. And before you attack me with some crap about us "German car fans being defensive", I am only pointing out the truth. The GS is a nice car, but in no way does it own the competiton. The BMW 5-series outhandles it and so does the Infiniti M45. The Mercedes E-Class has better brakes and apparently the better comfort too. Audi A6? AWD and sporty characteristics. What does the Lexus GS have? Aside from a reliability and a hybrid and some overrated driving dynamics, it has nothing big over the competition as you dreamers like to claim.

BMW530i, yes I agree. The GS doesn't own the category by any means. What it does do is have a very nice polish to it, which for a daily cruiser might be just the ticket, especially at the price and HP they're giving. It isn't about dynamics with this car. I've borrowed this car for a while and it is just a nice car. Not ballz out but just a nice car. No 5-series.

The GS is the ugliest sedan in the Lexus lineup, let alone the class! The only thing that I would even consider buying it over is the retro S-Type!

It is just a very blah, yet somehow very outrageous, design. It does not flow at all, I have no idea what you're smoking. I used to think the 5 Series was ugly, too. But then I saw C & D article comparing the 550i to the hybrid GS450h to see which approach made for a better sports sedan. It wasn't how the 550i won that caught my attention, it was the pictures. It had the two next to each other, and the GS has a similar profile, but it just looks bloated, has too many conflicting lines and has odd, fat bulges in comparison to the 5 Series. The only reason people find the 5 Series so offensive is the lights- the rest of it isn't any new approach to a sedan design. It hasn't one curve about it, which is a good thing. It almost retains the old 5's classic design, now that I look at it. The GS, on the other hand... Lexus needs to get its styling together.

And, the interior? It's nice, but it's completely derivative. The A6 has a very distinctive design that most Lexus models lack. Lexus needs to set an interior design and use it (although tweak it) for their models. Look at Audi and Mercedes- Audi has a contemporary elegance theme, and Mercedes is pure German elegance, and both are executed well. They're very distinctive to their respective brands. Although Lexus has an interior theme for its sedans, it could come from any other manufacturer. They need that distinction to set them apart. But the A6 and GS interiors aren't even comparable. The leather may be nice, but most Lexuses are full of cheap plastics on the dashboard that doesn't exactly make the interior better. You won't find one cheap surface in the A6.

I don't think anyone has the right to criticize Lexus' designs unless they have seen one in person. Pictures aren't flattering to Lexus cars. They don't do justice to the elegance and prestigious look they have in real life. If you have seen one in person and still hate it, then you're weird. The GS is one of those cars that pop out of the traffic. You don't even have to be looking directly at it and yet you notice it. Normal people love this car.

What? How can you be 'scared' of a car? Does it suddenly make every other car inferior? Absolutely not!

Please, stop pulling the 'fear' card, because it is very childish.

The only time anyone could be scared of a car is if it is very fast and hard to control, or the brakes fail at high speed.

Other than that, maybe its the less than elegant styling that gets the knees trembling?

However to make up for some of BMW's short commings in recent years, BMW fanatics will badmouth anything that puts up a good fight with a any of their BMW models. Will,

Nobody said that the GS was a better performer than anything! That's just you German car fans always resorting to "performance" and "magic feel" when you have no other defense yet again.
===========================================

Supra apparently thinks otherwise. And I never use "magic feel of German cars" as an excuse: never.

The thing that the GS has that all the others don't is ease-of-use and everyday driveability.
==============================================

Uh no. ALL cars in this class have what you just described above.

For instance, the 5-Series and M45 aren't comfortable at all, the A6 only has quattro, which doesn't appeal to everyone, and the E-Class is nice, but nothing special. The GS is the perfect alternative, and is clearly the choice for those looking for value and everyday cruising appeal.
==============================================

The GS is nice, but let's face it: that's it. It COULD USE AWD for instance, but Lexus chooses not to. Say someone living in a region with terrible winter conditions is looking for a new luxury car with AWD. He loves the new Lexus GS...but...it's only RWD. What choices are there? Audi A6, MB E-Class, Acura RL and even a the Xi models from BMW.

BMW530i,

You are wrong when you say, "The GS is nice, but let's face it: that's it. It COULD USE AWD for instance, but Lexus chooses not to."

The GS350 does come in an all-wheel drive version. AT 303 horsepower. That's news. Because as you know, most AWD cars are much lower (Audi excepted).

And as far as talking about childish, weak arguments: not every car does what you so quickly take away from Lexus. I've driven various Lexus cars for weeks. It's been said again and again but you guys just ignore it: there is a fit-and-finish to Lexus that is truly impeccable. (Yes, better than BMW.)

You APPEAR to be scratching your head over the GS but people like Will and myself who know Lexus inside and out give you the answer ,and you still act like you're not clear why anyone would want this car.

No one is suggesting YOU personally change your name to GS350, but you are getting the answers you seek. You may want to at least acknowledge what other people are telling you, in the fairness of our time.

You are voluntarily participating on a GS350 post, for pete's sake. Seriously. Slinging your "childish weak" stuff on a post of a car you find worthless is really not worth a lot of people's time to respond.

I'm sure you feel the same when it's a BMW post and antagonists are stirring you up with thick-headed statements.

I did not know there was an AWD version of the GS.

===================================================

Where do I claim that the Lexus GS has a bad interior or poor build quality? I don't doubt these things at all, but YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND that you have ignorant little pricks like LexusIS350 here who claim that the GS is the best in class. Best in class for what? Compare it to a 5-series and the handling won't be up too par. I don't need to drive one to make that statement. The GS isn't a sports sedan, even if the Lexus ads claim that. The same way I don't see the IS350 as a BMW competitor (it competes more with the C350 IMO).

You APPEAR to be scratching your head over the GS but people like Will and myself who know Lexus inside and out give you the answer ,and you still act like you're not clear why anyone would want this car.
==============================================

What? Where have you two given me an answer? I might not be a Lexus expert, but I know enough about the brand to form my own objective opinions. If you see me slamming Lexus here, I do it to talk some sense into ignorant little shits like LexusIS350.

I'm sure you feel the same when it's a BMW post and antagonists are stirring you up with thick-headed statements.
=========================================

Actually, I've been pretty tolerant with people ranting on BMW. I only jump in when someone says something which isn't true. For example, I tolerate the talk about poor BMW interiors - because it is practically true. However, when someone claims that the Lexus IS350 is better than the 3-series because it's "faster", then I am obliged to talk some sense with these people.

You and I agree, the GS isn't best in class. I appreciate your response:)

For a BMW mindset, it must be insane to buy a car that isn't best-in-class. But when you can have a 2nd best car that is truly 2nd best in many areas, that in itself is a good combination.

And fit-and-finish isn't build quality to me, it's an intangible sheen of quality (think the magic feel for your Bimmer) that impresses with its consistency.

I do admire Lexus having a consistency, which is hard to find in any product these days.

"Give me a ring when Lexus actually becomes successful internationally."
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Just you wait. And until then, I don't think it matters if Lexus does well in other countries. It does well in mine and that's what's important. Mercedes can't say they do better than Lexus. Neither can BMW or Audi. So, I don't care that Lexus isn't well known internationally. And, in other countries, Mercedes is the same as Honda in this country, they make cheap, everyday cars.

thats not true.
a small merc is still a merc.
nothing like honda.
they are common, yes. but also prestigious.

Firstly, i would like to say hi to Will. The GS. nice looking car, somewhat sporty but not aggressive enough. Will claims its not a performer, rather its best out in its class in terms of everyday use, if so why not get a freakin optioned out camry or avalon, same reliability, nice luxury features and thousands less than the GS, since its greatness is its everyday driveability. I am going to have to attack Will again, sorry Will but you just make me do this to you, is that the hofmister kink on the GS, oh sorry lets take that out and give it back to BMW, did we get those quad head lamps from the E class, yes we did, lets be gracious and give that back as well. better yet the fron looks like the biggest scion tc i have ever seen, the interior looks ok, in an ATM kind of way, the back is chunky as much as that of the 5 series might appear, nevertheless, i still like the design of the ES, seriously, it's a nice looking car and so is the 5. The 5 to me is beautiful but the design intentions were not executed to perfection. I personally love the interior of the new BMW, not as great as some of their counterparts but still have a unique beauty to them. I like some of the Lexus designs, but the ES to me is just an upscale camry. But as long as Will continues to bash Bimmer, i will always bash Lexus, even though i appreciate them. I am a designer myself, and actually loved BMW more in the Bangle era, the designs were far more captivating than that of other car companies IMO. Mercedes make elegant and beautiful cars, but once u see one, u've seen them all, they never get to far from the same designs, S-Class, a beauty to behold, Audi, i just reccently began to understand their designs, very clean and properly finished both interior and exterior, more than their counterparts, but BMW is where my heart is, they will always be the best to me, like Lexus will always be the best to Will.

Rupert-
Sarcastically speaking the Civic is the most prestigious car in the U.S. right now. Mercedes in other countries are dump trucks, busses, etc. Those aren't prestigious at all and you can't even argue that. And those little Mercedes' are comparable to a Civic, so, by your words, a Civic is prestigious.

Hey Will, no problem at all, here is my bash against Lexus

Lexus designs are absolutely horrible! the GS has to be the most hideous car to date, second only to the very-similar looking Pontiac Aztek AND Lexus ES.

Lexus interiors are not the best, Toyotas reliability is the best, Toyotas quality is the best, Lexus don't have the best designs, they're overpriced, they look exactly like their Toyota counterparts, they steal design elements from other cars and no doubtedly have been influenced by German engineering, The last generation of Lexus cars were a joke in terms of styling and performance so this year they made all their cars look like spaceships, how luxurious can a car get Will? why pay for a Lexus when i can just get the same Toyota for thousands less, doesn't the tail lights how the new IS remind u of that of the new HYUNDAI SONATA?

Shall I contintue?

You see Will, i can see that you really are not a car enthusiast, you are more like a cry baby, whining about Lexus, who the hell is Lexus in the world, it is not up there with Benz, Audi, BMW, Jag and a host of others. You see Lexus make reliable cars, nice and pleasant, but real car fanatics desire a little bit more, if we did not seek performance we would buy Honda accords and be content. Ferraris, Lambos, Bentleys, Spykers, etc do not have the greatest interiors, greatest reliabilty, nor are they the most luxurious, but their prestige and what they stand for cannot be denied. Yes a Corvette can beat some of these cars in 0-60 BUT DOES NOT MEAN IT IS ON THE SAME LEVEL WILL. I do not mind having to send my Bimmer to the dealer often because i know when i drive it, it satisfies my desires as to what a performance car should be,

"Sorry," Will, but you just make me do this to you!"

Lol.

The tail lights of the Hyundai Sonata were stolen from the 2003/2004 Honda Accord. Compare the two. No difference. Hyundai copied Honda. With the name and everything. Why would Lexus stoop to Hyundai's level?

It's true. BMW530i, diablo69, S4cabriofox, and others keep arguing the same thing. They have nothing left because Lexus has left little room for compromise. All you hear is, "Well, they're okay, but they still aren't international" or "They have no power". Well German fans, I'm predicting the future: Lexus will be an international name brand in the near future and judging by the new IS 500, they will have more power comparible to your AMGs and M-Series and you low-lifes won't have anything to bash Lexus with anymore.

The 5 series is not the only car in this segment. I can't understnd the need to always compare a Lexus with a BMW in every segment.
There is the Infiniti M45, E-Class from MB, Acura RL, A6 from Audi, and 5 Series from BMW. By singling out just the 5 series, there seems to be an admission by the person that made the post:the King of the segment is the BMW.
I hate to say this, but it seems there is some sort of Lexus-inferiority-complex with respect to BMW. There seems to be an underlying point to prove; lexus is as a good as BMW.

I think each car has it's relative strength and weakness, and we should appreciate the cars for being the engineering & artistic masterpiece that they are.

So BMW's strength is performance, it's weakness is its reliabliity. Lexus' strength is their reliability, it's weakness is...I can't think of one.

So say Autospies was around back in 1988. Lexus didn't exist as such, would there still be such negativity toward German cars?

Would huu76 and the like be offering us their wisdom about how Buick make better cars than Mercedes-Benz?

Are German cars really unreliable pieces of junk? Or is that only relative, when Lexus is put in the mix?

The Europeans have always been known for their blend of unique and timeless style, driving enjoyment and character, their solid build quality and reassuring 'thunk' of their doors. How has that been forgotten? I mean these attributes are stronger than ever, now coupled with ever-increasing levels of safety and daring design.

Lexus has brought their customers a reliable and comfortable alternative to the aforementioned, but have they somehow also made the Europeans go backwards?

Lexus now stands on equal footing with the Germans, but to bring them up in every post as the obvious and superior choice baffles me.

You may think I'm being hypocritical and biased, after all I am forever falling to the charms of a well-styled European.

Based on the comments on this site, it looks as though Lexus has pushed the Germans into the background.

But is that any indication of reality? I think not.

No one is discrediting Lexus, but one must also remain level-headed.

Were you guys really talking about the door thunk? Even Toyota has that thunk. There isn't anything special about it.

If anything, the Land Cruiser doesn't have that sound. They haven't redesigned it since they've had that thunk. The Avalon, Camry, and Corolla I know from experience have the thunk. The 4Runner is not to bad either.

All you BMW and Audi lovers are just jealous that Lexus can make a naturally inspired 3.5 liter with over 300hp and BMW and Audi are still struggling to make a decent looking, reliable car.

I like the gs350 its an all around solid car...but honestly...not one car on the market can compare to the audi s5 for the price. It absolutly looks, performs, and has all the specs of a 100,000 dollar car. Audi dealerships are actually complaing to the Audi manufacts. that the cars price is far too low for what the customer gets.
