Even so, VW's profit per car is a fraction of Toyota's profit per car.

You mean Toyota uses cheaper parts?

Read "The Machine That Changed the World". Toyota pioneered more efficient ways of designing, getting parts, and building cars. Far more efficient than the Europeans. Also all those brands are costing VW reducing profits versus Toyota.

Vette71 - Forbes said VW is more profitable in 2013.
Your book was written in 2007. A lot has changed since then

The German manufacturer has the highest revenues, profits and assets of any automaker, according to Forbes’ 2013 Global 2000 list. Its market value is second only to Toyota’s.

MDarringer brings up a valid point. We see something similar in the phone wars. Samsung is the lion in terms of smartphone unit sales numbers, however Apple owns the lion's share of the smartphone profits even though they sell fewer numbers.

The same thing *might* be happening with VW and Toyota. If it turns out that VW sold more units than Toyota, but ended up not doing so well financially, that might not be something to write home about. I'm not familiar enough with unit sales numbers or the financial statements of either company to form a valid opinion as to whether this is "good" or "bad" for either.

Toyota's quality has suffered greatly since they made it a goal to sell the most cars, so it seems to me that this number one status comes with a lofty price. Toyota wins for having the most recalls, wee!

Hmm so VW needs around 10 brands to sell what, what toyota does with Lexus and scion as its only supporting brands...which sell in relatively small numbers anyway. The "VW group" may sell more cars, but I can guarantee more cars with a toyota emblem were sold this year than with a VW emblem. Making toyota the most sold brand, and that won't change for a very long time..

GM outsold both of them for years and went bankrupt.
