Toyota Already Has 16,000 Orders For Mirai Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Car - Executives Order More
Toyota's hydrogen fuel-cell car hasn't even gone on sale yet, but executives say they are already ordering more.

Since the car, to be called the Mirai, made its debut late last year, Toyota has received about 16,000 "hand raisers" in the USA — expressions of interest in obtaining one.

Are "hand-raisers" the same as "orders"?

Once again 009 makes a title for the article not based in fact. They don't need 16000 orders as they have no plan to make that many in the first year anyway. I'm sure if they sell 5000 they'll be on a 6 month wait.

But why does it look like a Civic inspired by predator

And when those early-adopter greenies with more money than brains are satisfied, then sales will implode.

There is nothing green about hydrogen. It requires natural gas, water, and a lot of electricity to make it (steam reformation) and it emits carbon dioxide in the process.

This is kind of like children taking medicine, a lot of bitterness out there :-) As for greenies with more money than brains, I guess they have just barely enough brain to get enough money to waste on such cars, eh?

Except that they are unintelligent enough to squander it on a truly unintelligent boondoggle like this.

True greenies hate hydrogen as it is used to detract from real solutions. The only ones squandering are Toyota, Honda and Hyundai that are pushing this boondoggle to get the maximum number of ZEV credits without actually doing anything meaningful.

Why do most fuel efficient cars often look like crap?

I think there's two forces at work here:

1) Manufacturers want to deliver something that looks completely different on the road to make sure people understand that this isn't an "ordinary" vehicle. Image matters and Tesla is the biggest proof of that.

2) Coefficient of drag: there's only so many ways to make a two ton object slippery through the air.

Because they don't want to sell them.

MDarringer - are you angry that these "unintelligent" people squander their money on a Toyota rather than squander their money on whatever brand of car that you sell now? Sorry, I meant to say whatever brand of car that you have "stake"/"ownership" in now? Imagine, all those unintelligent Prius owners that could have bought your cars. Besides, what do you care, they're just "hand raiser" and not "order", right?
