RAM To Take On GM And Ford With Fiat Based Mid-Sized Pickup - Are You Sold On The Segment?
The arrival of the GM mid-size pickup twins, the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, may spark a new-found interest in the segment. GM correctly realized that not every truck buyer wants or needs a full-size offering. Sorry that not everyone is from Texas, Ford. Anyway, last fall the Ram 700 was revealed to fairly little media attention. It may just be a rebadged Fiat Strada compact pickup, but it was something of an indicator of Ram’s future product intentions.

Damn that trucklet is ugly. I hope RAM comes up with a small truck rather than a super ugly toy with recycled trash cans for wheel arches and a bumper.

It will be much more successful than the terrible Canyon/Colorado and the played out Tacoma/Frontier.

Lifestyle pickups are due for a return.

This is way too small to compete with the Canyon/Colorado - and lacks a major feature that truck buyers want - made in America

An FWD/AWD pickup could EASILY be built off the Dart/200 platform and made in the USA. A FWD prototype has been running around that appears larger than the Brazilian product.

I'd market an FWD/AWD pickup as a Fiat Stada in the USA rather than a RAM because (1) Fiat dealers need sales (2) it would be a soft pickup rather than a boulder crusher, and (3) it would have the same CAFE impact for FCA.

Small FWD pickups will be a necessary thing for CAFE.

I'm not convinced the Canyon/Colorado twins are a good move. They are only slightly smaller than full size. They get slightly better MPG and they cost slightly less.

A greater impact could have been had by putting a turbodiesel + an 8 speed auto in the Silverado/Sierra.
