BMW Has Enough! New i5/i7 On The Way To Extinguish The Tesla Spotlight Once And For All

There has been talk aplenty in BMWs cylindrical Munich HQ about the Silicon Valley upstart Tesla and its emergence as an executive challenger. So it should come as no surprise that a riposte is being prepared: an electric BMW potentially badged i5 or i7.

Due in 2018, the battery BMW is designed to hobble the success of Elon Musk’s Model S - and it’ll be priced to suit, with target volumes in the tens of thousands and a cost spanning from just below the Tesla to more than $125,000 (£85,000).

CAR has compiled a scoop dossier on the secret BMW i5/i7 model ahead of a possible concept car tipped for this autumn’s 2015 Frankfurt motor show. Read on for our full scoop.

@vdiv - good one on the "talk is cheap (free on this site). I'll admit it, I'm a perpetrator of this as well. Gawd almighty, the internet has really turned couple billion people into loudmouth experts :-)

I'll believe it when I see it delivered ....5 years from now.

BMW is definitely the carmaker who has the wherewithal and drive to squash Tesla like a bug!

I may be a hollow victory, because I'm not sure the sales/market potential is there for a big seller - but BMW will certainly do a good job with it.

If the Model X is the home run Elon is promising, I don't see anyone - including BMW - getting in way of Tesla.

There was a time not that long ago when IBM dwarfed Apple...

For a new automaker, Tesla's performance and execution has been impressive. Someone does need to step up and give them some competition. Happy to see BMW is up to the challenge, and they should have an engineering advantage, but if they go with hybrid designs as noted here, they will still be behind. The i3 is not appealing. Real buyers want good looking cars. And if a buyer wants to be green and accepts plug-in technology, why would someone still want to fill up with gas? I'd either prefer a great gas engine luxury car with great driving performance, or go all in on electric and plug-in, and still have good performance. So far, Tesla is the only option. The i5/i7 will produce better fuel savings compared to gas engines, but it doesn't seem like they will compete directly with Tesla.

If Porsche does the Pajun as an all electric and priced like a Tesla, the game is OVER.

Tesla simply does not have the money nor the volume to make it long term as a stand-alone manufacturer. Its best bet is to get sold to a big company.

Lol. Open your eyes brother. Tesla is worth $27 billion. That's almost 50% of what BMW is worth in what - 12 years in business? I think they'll do just fine.

By the way - Porsche on its own is worth just $12B.

Open your eyes dimwit, Tesla has ZERO credibility at longevity of its products. If kneeling before Elon Musk is your goal then you have succeeded. Everyone else knows your a fanboy douche.

Zero credibility with longevity? I'm sure you would be the same moron saying that about Toyota in year three of production right?

Despite government subsidies to the tune of roughly $30k per car sold (that's right, every rich cool guy show off who buys a $100k Model S costs regular taxpayers like you and me $30k), Tesla has not once been profitable and loses almost $100M per quarter. The stock evaluation is an absolute crock and a dot com bubble waiting to happen. The only way they stay in business at all are those subsidies and by selling zero emission credits to other manufacturers. The whole thing is just a bunch of rich guys getting richer by screwing over the general public, and the most amazing part is somehow the media has Keyser Soze'd everyone into thinking they're awesome because they're "rebels against the big car companies". Frankly the fact that they're pulling this off during a time where general dislike of the 1% is at an all time high is just incredible.

Funny how the BMW i series is hideous as hell and the Tesla is attractive like the Fusion it resembles.

I'm not a huge Tesla fan or critic, but I do find it amusing how much success they have had in a short period of time, and how defensive BMW fanboys are when it comes to Tesla. Tesla has been the biggest innovator in the automobile industry in recent years, and BMW is just now thinking they'll try to play ball in 2018? Tesla owns this space, and I think it will be hard for BMW to make any inroads when they do finally come out with the I5/I7.
