Porsche 717 Scurries From Under The Covers - Are Tesla's Days Numbered?

Porsche is busy preparing a battery-powered rival to the successful all-electric Tesla Model S - and CAR has details of this project, provisionally badged the Porsche 717.

It’s being developed on the Volkswagen group’s latest MSB architecture under development for the Panamera Mk2 and the next Bentley Continental.

If all goes according to plan, we can expect a sporty four-door, four-seater with clear 911 overtones, wrapped in a more compact footprint than a Panamera’s. Our artist’s impression above shows the kind of direction being explored by Porsche’s design department, according to our sources. Sounds like the 911 cookie cutter hasn’t run out yet…

In a word YES. Two cars at a high price point. Porsche has experience building cars. Tesla has experience bolting batteries into a Lotus. I'm going with superior Porsche engineering and the deep VWAG pockets that allow it.

Note that the picture is an Artist's Deception and the numbers are purely speculative.

I don't think the question is whether a Porsche EV will decimate Tesla's sales, but whether the kind of customer who's seriously considering a Porsche Panamera wants an EV in the same package. That's a tough question to answer.

(1) Porsche will do an EV; that's a no-brainer.

(2) Making it smaller than the Panamera would be wise.

(3) It is NOT a tough question to answer. A Porsche EV will lure customers who would not buy a Porsche because Porsche=performance=lower MPG when driven as a Porsche should be.

(4) A Porsche EV cannot get to the market quickly enough.
