Infiniti Says Q60 Will Pack 450HP - But Does This Change Anything?

We’ve been worried for some time about Infiniti. There’s been no official announcement for a production-spec Q50 Eau Rouge, and really no other clear indication of a high performance future. Apparently rebadged and reskinned Nissans are good enough. Heck, Infiniti’s now former CEO jumped ship to Cadillac. But there seems to be a ray of hope. According to AutoGuide, not only is a production version of the Q60 Concept coupe that premiered last month at Detroit on its way, it’ll also pack quite a punch.

The design alone is miles ahead of Lexus and more cohesive, again Infiniti has potential, but they must FOLLOW THROUGH and UP after successful models.

Producing 1-2 hot models per decade is not going to cut it if they want to play with the big boys

Boy I could not agree more Car4Life! Infinity has been on the edge of doing something great and then they either ignore their progress or the screw it up and go a different direction. They left the G3X to die a slow death (as the 370Z is) when that car could have been developed and worked into a great car. Instead they left it to die with mediocre attempts to make it interesting/competitive. The big M model from 2006 was another they could have developed but again they ignored it. Then they go do this wholesale name change thing that totally confused most of us, I still am not clear what is what in the Infinity line up! Really dumb move. Let's see what they do I guess…but it sure seems like Deja Vu for Infinity … Lexus as well to a lesser extent.

Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Lexus, and Cadillac have nothing to fear.

I'm about 50/50 with you on this, Darringer. For the most part, I don't think Benz and BMW have much to be concerned with. They will continue to sell well despite what most of the competition offers. Despite being the oldest model in its segment, the C-Class has had its best sales the past 3 years in the 15 years since inception. And the 3/4 Series are simply unstoppable. I do think that Lexus may have concerns about a counter to its RC since Lexus is somewhat the anti-Benz and anti-BMW brand. If Infiniti offers a more attractive, better-driving, more-powerful alternative, then many will forget the RC. Cadillac could also have issues in trying to sell its overly conservative ATS coupe. Audi's biggest concern is not just with the Q60, but with the entire segment which will have all-new products once the Q60 and C coupe are introduced in the coming year (s). So, Audi needs to make sure they keep pace with an A5/S5 replacement.

^^^I agree to both comments above.

Infiniti was amidst developing brand recognition with the G, M, FX, & JX when their now ex-CEO decided to rename the lineup.

For a growing company, this is brand suicide.

The new naming scheme should have been introduced model-by-model. The G37 could have been shown transitioning to the new Q50, followed by the M37 to the Q70 & Q70L. Unfortunately, neither Q50 nor Q70 received a proper launch. I think the marketing budget for the Q70 is probably zero.

Infiniti also overshadowed the Q50 launch by announcing the name change across the lineup (effective immediately). Focus shifted from the lackluster Q50 launch to confusion surrounding the new moniker.

Infiniti threw away the "G" trying to revive "Q." It confused a lot. Especially since the G37 is still sold alongside the Q50 badged as a Q40. The vehicle formally known as "G," is now being sold as a Q40, Q50, & Q60.

REALLY!?

Notwithstanding, I have high hopes for the "Q60." Infiniti needs to stay true to the concept and continue refining it's vehicles to suit modern tastes. I am looking forward to see the next gen G37C/Q60.

I agree the transition to the new names was not smooth. The other day I was showing my co-worker the Q60 Coupe. She logged onto the Infiniti website to find more information when I saw the Q40. Huh! I actually thought it was the renamed G25 which I was certain they dropped. I was completely lost trying to figure out what was what.

However, your last paragraph takes precedence over everything you wrote prior. No one is overlooking this car because it's called a Q instead of a G so we will just have to deal with it.

Just makes me wait for that 450+ hp to reach the Z or a 500+ hp version of a non-neutered FX.

Such silliness over the name changes...the automakers who have a challenge are those who create a lineup of vehicles which all look the same.

Could you imagine the feminine name of 'skyline' in the US? Vehicles are marketed to men and need to portray an image of masculinity and sportiness...even if most American men are overweight sloths. I bet even Darringer would feel more like a man in a Q60 than a Skyline...especially with an 'I Heart Putin' bumper sticker on it.
