For normal people: Ford Fusion. I bought one a couple months ago for my travel car. I can easily drive 5-700miles a week. Excellent quality. Great mileage. Comfortable. Cheap $24K nicely equipped.

For wealthy people: Maserati Ghibli a hoot to drive and my father-in-law's Ghibli is as reliable as the Chrysler 300 it largely is under the skin.

I don't pretend to know what's "best" for others. I can only tell you what I like (for myself), and what suits my needs, desires, and financial abilities. That's why I don't recommend vehicles to others.

I find myself recommending Honda (CRV, Pilot, and Accord) and Subaru (Legacy, XV Crosstrek, and Forester) most often to value oriented friends. The Hondas because of their reliability track record and drivability and Subarus because of their low-priced AWD (we live in Northeast). With friends and family more luxury-oriented I have gotten best feedback from Audi purchasers, though I usually recommend M-B and BMW just as often.
