Driven: 2015 Mercedes-AMG C63 S - Is It Ready To Give The M3 A Run For The Money?

This is the car that promises to provide the latest BMW M3 with its stiffest competition yet: the new Mercedes-AMG C63.

In line with the marketing strategy used for all recent new AMG models, the new C63 will be sold in both standard and S guises, with the latter receiving a more powerful engine among other upgrades aimed at providing it with greater performance potential.

Along with initial saloon and estate models set for UK delivery in March, coupé and cabriolet variants are also under development and are due for introduction by early 2016.

"The Mercedes-AMG C63 S represents real progress. It is clearly a more engaging car than its predecessor and perhaps more than ever before the car you would choose over the BMW M3.

Not only is it more powerful and quite a bit faster in a straight line than the old C63, it also offers improved cruising ability, is also significantly more economical and boasts class leading quality.

The clincher for me, though, is the sheer breath of its dynamic ability. Significantly sharper, more responsive and superbly balanced, it delivers superb handling and instills great confidence in the driver, even on the most challenging of roads."

I have a feeling this car will have the M3's number. The fabulous interior combined with the power and massive improvement in driving dynamics is the clincher.

If there's one are that creates a bit of pause for me, it's the transmission. AMG is using the same transmission from the previous model and there were some shift delays noted with that setup. No DCT here. And Chris Harris noted a bit of feel missing from the steering, though this article seems to be good with the steering. I absolutely cannot wait to see if they build a coupe version.

That droopy azz though...I just can't get past the profile. I'm sure many love it, but I think it's just plain awkward on this model.

Still weighs 400lbs more than the M3 and is saddled with that awful AMG MCT tranny, plus by the time this comes out there'll be an M3 Competition Package. Should be an interesting test.
