Toyota Tells Unions That $11.50 A Week For Workers Raise Is Out Of The Question
Toyota Motor Corp. rebuffed the largest wage increase proposal from its union since 1998, saying the raise would lift costs by about 20 billion yen ($168 million).

“It is impossible to accept this as it is,” Managing Officer Tatsuro Ueda told reporters today in Toyota City, Japan. “It is a higher-level proposal than we expected.”

Employment is like buying/selling a house: Advisors can tell you what they believe the market value is (or should be), but in reality, the market value is whatever buyer and seller agree to!

Employers want as much productivity as they can get for as little as they have to pay. Employees want as much compensation as they can get, for the minimal required effort. That's just human nature. If there's a line of similar people willing to take $10/hour for the work you do, and you (employee) want $11.50/hour, then sadly, you're not in a strong bargaining position. It all depends on how badly the employee wants the job, and how much the employer needs a specific employee.

Note to employees: If you're underpaid, underappreciated and working for a jerk of a boss, have your revenge by finding a more favorable employer, and find your happiness there. Alternatively, start up your own business, be your own boss, and make up your own rules and compensation structure. Or become a shrewd investor and use other people's money to become wealthy. The world is your oyster.

Not sure what to say about this, Japan just came out of a 10 year recession but TM is making huge profits. TM doesn't want to go the way the American auto industry has with the UAW.

Because the UAW in America is a bunch of old dinosaurs. They union was good when factories were like "sweat shops" back in the 30's, 40's and 50's. With laws governing safety (OSHA) and other institutions overseeing, those hazards are carefully watched. We don't need or want the pot smokers who seem to always put themselves first.
