Consumer Reports Says These Are The 10 Best Cars You Can Buy - Did They Leave Anything Off The List?

Say what you want about Consumer Reports, but the publication certainly does its homework. Many of its readers swear by its findings for a whole range of products, especially cars. So when its annual auto survey comes out, many people pay close attention. And now it’s released this year’s crop of the best cars, divided by classification. This Top 10 list is actually pretty diverse, brand wise. Sure there’s the familiar Subaru and Toyota, but this year both a Buick and Chevrolet made it. Just think about that for a moment.

Barely a decade ago, CR regularly faulted GM cars for their poor quality and reliability. Without further ado, here’s the complete list:

Best Overall: Tesla Model S
Compact: Subaru Impreza
Midsized Sedan: Subaru Legacy
Large Car: Chevrolet Impala
Luxury Car: Audi A6
Green Car: Toyota Prius
Sports Sedan: Buick Regal
Minivan: Honda Odyssey
Small SUV: Subaru Forester
Midsized SUV: Toyota Highlander

All good cars but nothing here that I would purchase. I don't believe on any of CR, JDP lists "best of anything".
But if I was going to purchase a car based on a magazine's recommendation I would go with Car and Driver's Top 10 (Nicer cars for enthusiasts).

Alright we get it...if you buy a Subaru, you'll go hiking, camping, biking, and fishing more, live a stress free life collecting bumper stickers on all your road trips...thanks CR

It's hard to take these lists seriously. Anytime I see a "Best of" list from a non-auto-enthusiast source, I give it the shady eye. These lists have a tendency to choose cars that are nowhere near the most popular amongst buyers or enthusiasts. Is that coincidence? I don't know. But I doubt it.

I don't know anyone... nor have I ever known anyone, ever... that has owned a Subaru. The brand continues to grow, but I must run in a completely different crowd... their cars are I suppose reliable? Whats the attraction? They're dumb and boring...

With the exception of the Audi and Tesla I would consider none of the cars on the list.

Agree with one exception. For its category the Honda Odyssey continues to be the best minivan. Sure it doesn't have an AWD version, but it is a vehicle that a family man (and a woman) can enjoy driving.

Kudos to GM for their burgeoning Buick brand and to Tesla for the remarkable Model S!

Any CR reader would know there are a range in every category and there have categories that cover virtually every passenger vehicle type. There is always one that lands on top but others high in the category can be a better choice based on personal preferences, for example a better track record of reliability versus an assessment based on zero to a few years. Perennial top rated Camry's and Accord's are still near the top if AWD carries no value. CR is the gold standard for balanced reviews and has benefited everyone by getting manufacturers to focus on continuous improvement even to the point of some revising models within a model year to correct shortcomings.

People who believe in Consumer Reports are clueless dolts.
