Nissan Recalls 878,000 Vehicles For Hoods That Fly Open
Nissan Motor Co. expanded the North American recall of its top-selling Altima sedan to about 878,000 vehicles because a secondary hood latch may fail and cause the hood to fly up while the car is in motion, according to a company filing with U.S. safety regulators.

A secondary latch is meant to keep the hood down if the primary latch is not engaged. But Nissan said that in model years 2013 to 2015 Altima sedans made from March 6, 2012 to Dec. 31, 2014, the secondary latch may not hold.

If I'm reading the info correctly, the hood is flying open because the hood is in its "stand-by" position, which can only be caused by 1) not fully securing the hood on closing or 2) by pulling the hood release whiel in motion or subsequently going into motion. Ok, fair enough, the hood isn't properly secured in that position.

But why issue a recall if you dont know how to fix it? To just inspect and lube the thing? Why not issue a warning bulletin advising consumers to ensure the hood is completely secure (by primary latch) at all times, then issue a recall when a fix is found? Otherwise, that's forcing consumers to come in twice for the same recall.

I had two Nissans for a cumulative total of 10 years. 60k miles in one. 84k miles in another.
Not. One. Single. Problem. EVER.

I have owned 6 Nissan/Infiniti vehicles over the last 25 years... and never had to do anything beyond routine maintenance. Flawless reliability not just for the engine/drivetrain, but for all mechanical components, including body hardware and electrical...so, no complaints here.

009 would have us believe that Altimas are just driving down the highway with hoods flying open at random. These thread titles are juvenile.
