RECALL: 24k 2015 Hyundai Genesis Are Being Called In For A Leak That Leads To A MUCH BIGGER Problem
The 2015 Hyundai Genesis was given many accolades in the past year. Many critics walked away mightily impressed with the all-new product that during its first-generation run caused significant buzz in the luxury space.

Competitors like the Audi A6, BMW 5-Series, Lexus GS and Mercedes-Benz E-Class were affected.

But even stellar products can fall victim to a recall now and then. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2015 Genesis may be plagued by a leak into the rear taillights. This, in turn, may lead to an electrical issue that will have the instrument panel display the wrong gear is engaged thereby increasing the risk of moving in the wrong direction — "R" is engaged but "D" displays.

If you picked up a 2015 Genesis, you should make some phone calls to learn if your vehicle is problematic.

NHTSA's press release follows:

RECALL Subject : Water may Leak into Rear Combination Lamp Assembly

Report Receipt Date: FEB 19, 2015
NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V097000
Component(s): ELECTRICAL SYSTEM , EXTERIOR LIGHTING , POWER TRAIN
Potential Number of Units Affected: 24,400
Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America

SUMMARY:
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2015 Genesis vehicles manufactured February 21, 2014, to January 24, 2015. Water may leak into the rear combination lamp assemblies and cause an incorrect gear display on the instrument panel or a delay in the engagement of the selected gear when the vehicle is shifted from Park to Reverse or Drive.

CONSEQUENCE:
If the incorrect gear is being displayed, the vehicle may move in an unintended direction, increasing the risk of a crash.

REMEDY:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will apply pads to prevent water intrusion into the combination lamp housing, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-671-3059. Hyundai's number for this recall is 128.

NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

All's quiet on the 009 front when it comes to Hyundai/Kia recall, eh?

I know you don't want to go there. I mean people were rather "quiet" when the 2009 Pilot's backend rippd off the Scion XB's yet the 2010 Forte' got all the attention. Just like how the 2016 Sorento gets all the attention and the 2016 Pilot's greenhouse ripping the Traverse's is ignored. Or how the Buick Regal and Volvoo S60's backends get ignored unless I bring them up.

Is that the oddest cause-and-effect issue? Water leaks into rear light assembly and creates confusion in the transmission display and not any other electric issues?

Regarding the Genesis' impact on the industry, I'm not so sure the Germans were as affected. Since 2009, the E-Class' sales have been its highest ever. The 5 Series also achieved strong sales. Not sure of the A6's numbers. I think, possibly, the most affected brands were Acura and Infiniti as the Genesis was seen as a viable alternative to the much-maligned TL/RL combo and the not-so-loved M. Oddly, last year, the Genesis achieved its lowest sales in the past 5 years despite the model being brand new and getting much positive press. Maybe that's more a results of the coupe's sales dropping as it's ready for its redesign.

Oh you don't say? Only the lowest in 5 years eh? Did the VW Phatom last 5 years? I wonder if that SWB Genesis is still on the way? If it is, it would be a great rival to the SWB version of the 2015 Pontaic G8.

WTH are you trying to say? I wasn't talking negatively about the Genesis, just pointing out what I thought was an odd circumstance. Chill out.
