SPIED! Volkswagen Auto Group's

The Volkswagen Group has suggested that its Porsche brand will launch a battery-electric model in the next few years. The company is also planning to launch a hydrogen fuel cell model under the VW, Audi and Porsche brands.

Speaking the evening before the VW Group annual conference, research and development boss Ulrich Hackenberg teased the new models during a presentation of future technology.

FYI, I did considerable research before I ordered my Q5 3.0 TDI. As part of that, I looked into the Q5 Hybrid. I wasn't impressed. The cost is significantly higher than non-hybrid variants. Its pure-electric range is just a few miles. In real-world use, you get better fuel economy with the less expensive 3 liter diesel in highway and combined city/highway driving. This hybrid delivers marginally better fuel economy in the city and similar frequent stop-and-go conditions, such as a long, slow commute.

From an engineering perspective, in this specific implementation Audi has built a traditional gasoline-powered vehicle, and added some electric stuff to enhance the fuel economy a little bit under very specific circumstances, and they call it a "full hybrid."

This just goes to show you that not all hybrids are created equal. When you see "hybrid" emblazoned on a vehicle, it doesn't mean it's necessarily better than a non-hybrid variant, though that just what the marketing people want you to believe.

I find it hilarious how VW doesn't get it. Hybrids are two decades ago and they are just getting around it it. Honda and Toyota beat them to the hydrogen world.

Prices will be stupid to begin with and repair prices will be beyond ridiculous.

Will they address their lagging quality/reliability/durability?

VW USA needs a new Passat with models that are hybrid, and plug in hybrid and they needed that 5 years ago to be charitable.

Better late than never. Door is wide open for Tesla and new entrants like Apple to take away from the Germans.
