Should Hyundai Green Light A Santa Cruz Based Pickup?

Hyundai Motor Company might be interested in building a production pickup truck for the American market, but this is a rumor circulating around for the last years or so. However, the company’s recent presence in Detroit and good feedback from potential customers might change the game.

If Hyundai decides to play the pickup truck game, there will be a lot of obstacles to overcome and the most difficult one is breaking into a market dominated by USA’s Detroit Three. But since the South-Koreans decided to unveil the Hyundai Santa Cruz pick-up prototype in Detroit, we could say that something might be in the making.

I'd defer to Hyundai's market analysis and cost/benefit research on this. I'd bet they've done a lot more homework on this topic than I have, so their opinion is a lot more informed and pertinent than mine. I can only tell you it's not a vehicle for me.

I dig this! This or a Jeep truck (if it were made) might be something I would have in the future

If they do it, they will likely only see modest sales. Their current SUV lineup is only doing about 1/3 of what their major competitors are, so I can't see a pickup stealing much more in sales from even stronger competition from Ford, Chevy, and RAM. Hyundai will find the segment even more difficult to make a dent in the market than Honda did with the Ridgeline.

The answer is HELL YES! The Honda Fridgeline was a great idea that was executed like a turd in a toilet. "Lifestyle" pickups represent a segment bound to take off. Honda's stupidity is NOT indicative of potential. This and the Fiat Strada pickup re-imagined is pure gold waiting to happen.

They should do it. If Kia is bringing the Kia GT to production what harm would a soft pick up truck from Hyundai do?
