Blasphemy Or Reality? Elon Musk Says He Sees A Future Where Driving Will Be Illegal
It may become illegal for humans to take the wheel once self-driving cars have proven themselves, Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk said at a conference here.

“In the distant future, I think people may outlaw driving cars because it’s too dangerous,” Musk said at a conference held by graphics chipmaker Nvidia Corp. “You can’t have a person driving a two-ton death machine.”

Musk made his remarks alongside Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, whose company supplies Tesla with high-powered processors. The Tesla Model S uses one of Nvidia’s chips to power its instrument cluster and another one to power its 17-inch navigation screen.

right, but I agree with him for the most part, however it should already be illegal for certain idiots drive.

I swear I just want drive up to the moron veering into everyone's lane, or the older individual making "frequent stops", or the new teens whom are more concerned with whats happening on their smart phone than whats happening through their windshield, and ask, who gave you a license?

Some regions in the US have passed laws making it illegal to be "off the grid" (not connected to municipal utilities). Some regions have passed laws mandating that manufacturers must sell a certain number of EVs (Electric Vehicles) by a specific date, thereby making it illegal to sell too many non-EVs.

Remember, laws are passed by law-makers: politician and their lawyers. They don't necessarily reflect the will of the majority, or common sense.

Musk is probably half right. More likely there will be roads and zones in the future in which it will be illegal to operate non-autonomous vehicles. This just makes sense.

Amen. The good news is that by the time this could happen most of us will have cold dead hands. Elon forgets that tort lawyers exist and will have a field day with this. Just think; how do you program an autonomous car that finds it is going to crash to decide to take an action that kills its passengers (say hit a tree)versus kill the other vehicles passengers? Lawyers will be the winners but slow adoption down by decades.

It will take a few decades, but he's probably 80% right on this.

Once the number of self-driving cars on the road becomes greater than 50%, it won't take long.
